Gorge Wind Forecast

ALow pressure associated with all this heat will slowly shift from the Metro Area to the Cascades today. Surface wind flow will shift from offshore to onshore, easterly to westerly, as this happens. Once that low moves to the east, we’ll be in a westerly pattern for at least the next several days. Periodic incoming weather systems will drive periods of stronger wind, including the possibility of a very strong afternoon Corridor (near Hood River) session Tuesday.

For Saturday, though, we start with light east gradients and light east wind. By noon, we should see westerlies at 5-10 from Stevenson to Viento. From then on, it’s all upward: westerlies climb to 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s by mid-afternoon and fill in to Arlington at 10-13 by evening. Before I forget, there’s a “Flash Work Party” at the Hood River Waterfront Park stairs at 9am to rake and redistribute gravel. You’ll earn merit and karma points for helping out.

Deeper marine air on Sunday morning cools the west. Desert areas stay hot and arid. Morning westerlies look like 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with 5-10 farther east. From there, it’s a quick build to 24-27 through the entire Gorge. Models suggest the western Gorge wind will drop off and turn gusty early afternoon (14-18) with 24-27 holding east of Mosier.

Monday’s offshore pressure readings drop during the day in response to a trough of low pressure near Alaska and BC. Westerlies decrease as a result. Morning wind will be 17-20 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 east of there to Arlington. Afternoon wind: 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier, 11-14 near Rowena, and light wind east of The Dalles. We’re keeping an eye on Tuesday afternoon for a big day on the river if the timing works out right.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Jones Saturday: 24-27. Jones Sunday: 17-20. Monday: 15-18. Sauvie’s Saturday: 13-16. Sunday: 11-14 late. Monday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Not really much at all (W or NW 5-10 or less) for the next three days with 3-4 foot swell.

Hood River Weather Forecast

It’s going to be another hot day in the Gorge. Dewpoints are up some, so it won’t be quite as arid, but still… plenty of dry heat out there! Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 80’s this afternoon. Calm wind through midday and then moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday looks sunny but cooler. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and upper 70’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. Monday will still be sunny. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Next rainbow chance: Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

There are still lots of wildflowers out there, so please do ride right now before they are gone! If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. There is a parking area 0.5 miles farther down the road. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.

Upcoming Events

Coming up Saturday: The Carson to Stevenson Ridge Run, the Cascade Chainbreaker (Bend), and the 4-H Fundraiser Horseback ride in Glenwood. There are two plant sales: The Next Door on Tucker Road, and the FFA sale at HRVHS. Other activities: a shop ride from Mountain View Cycles meeting at 8:45. Shortt Supply’s “Miles for Moms” monthly community run at 9:30 (it’s ‘Dad Bod Run’ next month), and a free bootcamp workout in Sorosis Park at 10. The 180 trail work party has been rescheduled for May 25. Coming up Sunday, Trailkeepers has a work party at Punchbowl Falls. You’ll need to sign up ahead of time on EventBrite.
