Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

There’s light snow falling on Mt. Hood this morning, and that will continue through mid-afternoon. A break in the snowfall under mostly cloudy sky lasts until midnight, when another round of light snowfall picks up. The snow level today will be 1000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon and evening, and less than 1000′ after midnight. We’ll see .2-.4” water value (WV) between this morning and 4pm, for 2-4” of new snow (probably the lower end of that). Another inch of new falls tonight. Wind today will be S 10-15 for most of the day, rising to WSW 20-25 in the afternoon and turning to SW 15 after midnight.

Sunday brings another round of light snowfall during the day with cloudy sky in the afternoon. The snow level will be less than 1000′ early, rising to 2500′ in the afternoon and falling to 1000′ or so after midnight. Just an inch or two of snow will fall during the day. Wind on Sunday will be SW 15 early, SW 25 by mid-morning, and S 15 after midnight.

Monday starts off with a round of heavier precipitation. The p-type really depends on the exact track of the incoming storm system. As of now, the sounding model is hinting at wet snow, but the 850mb model is showing temps of 2-4 degrees Celsius at 5000′, hinting at rain. For now, let’s call the snow levels at 2000′ early, 6000′ mid-morning, and 5000′ after 4pm, dropping to 2500′ after midnight. Between 4am and 4pm, around .6” WV will fall, for a couple inches of snow mixed with a few tenths of an inch of rain. After 4pm, we’ll see just a trace of snow, perhaps up to an inch. Wind on Thursday will be S 15 early, SW 30 mid-morning, SW 35 in the afternoon, and WSW 35 after midnight.

The weather on Tuesday depends on the exact track of the next storm system. As of right now, the models take the bulk of the precipitation north of the Columbia River, leaving he Mt. Hood area with just an inch or a few inches of snow. The snow level looks to be around 2500′ with this system. After Tuesday we head into a colder pattern with NW flow. There won’t be much moisture around, but the flow direction should give us a few inches of orographic snowfall.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was out in Portland last night attending an event outside of my comfort zone for one of my classes. I’ve mentioned this prof before – she has us do things that expand our life experiences. While this is important for counseling students, I also think it’s important for regular old human beings (which counselors are too, btw!).

See, 1 in 6 people will experience depression at some point in their life. While the causes of depression are varied, one of the big contributors is a sense of stuckness and hopelessness. When we’re stuck, we can’t see a way out of our situation. We’re trapped by our past experiences. That’s where breaking out of our comfort zone can improve our mood.

By trying something new, especially something in the domain where we are stuck, we give ourselves hope that things can be different. Trying a new approach, activity, or behavior, gives us a sense that there may be a path out of our rut. And that gives us hope. So, step past your fears and preconceived notions of life, and try something out of your comfort zone. It’ll provoke some anxiety, for sure, but it’ll also bring out your curiosity and spirit of adventure. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. There are reports that the Petersburg Loop in The Dalles is clear of snow… In addition to that, I was jogging in Odell yesterday, and there’s not much gravel on the roads up there.

Upcoming Events

There’s a Spanish language yoga class at Flow at 7am and the Cold Lap Cross Ride at Dirty Fingers at 3pm. The cross ride is actually a road ride today due to snow everywhere, so bring a road bike. After that, at 5pm, there’s a showing of the movie The Warriors at Dirty Fingers.

Have an awesome day today!
