Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Happy Christmas Eve, everyone! It’s going to be a rainy day on the slopes today. Tomorrow will be dry. After that: rainy until Tuesday afternoon when dumping snow arrives. Skibowl and Timberline are open today. Meadows is closed due to 1) rain forecast and 2) the safety of staff attempting to get to/from work.

Clouds start the day on the slopes, and rain arrives mid-morning in drenching form. The snow level will be 8000′ this morning and will rise to 10,000′ tonight. About 0.5” rain is forecast during the day and another 0.5” to 1.0” tonight thanks to orographic effects. Wind: SW 20-30 this morning, W 50 this afternoon (which will likely shut down some lifts) and W 20 overnight.

Dry weather Sunday daytime gives way to rain around midnight. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning and 9000′ overnight. About 0.5” rain is forecast after midnight. Wind: W 20 early, SW 15-20 in the afternoon building to SW 30-45 overnight.

Monday will be rainy, rainy, rainy as an atmospheric river plows into the Northwest. There could be short period of mixed precip in the afternoon, but it’s negligible for our purposes. The snow level will be 9000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ after midnight. About 1.5” rain is forecast during the day. Add on another inch or so of rain overnight. Wind: SW 30-45 in the morning, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and SW 35-50 overnight.

The path of Tuesday’s system is not yet clear. It will likely be very warm and wet in the morning. Afternoon weather transitions to a full-on blizzard. Current forecast has a couple feet of snow with 70mph west wind, but this is likely to change as most models take this system farther north than the operational model I generally use. We’ll keep looking at this one. Generally speaking, the next 5-7 days after Tuesday look very, very wet with alternating periods of rain and heavy snow. Hello snowpack. Nice to build ya!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies start off the day (it’s Saturday) at nearly 60mph at Rooster Rock. They’ll fall to 20-30 mph this afternoon. River flow readings are 90-115kcfs, river temp is 39F (falling fast!) and high temp forecast is in the mid to upper 20’s (ignore your phone). Sunday starts with light/variable wind at Rooster and 15mph near Stevenson. Afternoon: 20-25 at Stevenson and 30-35 at Rooster. High temp: unclear. Low to mid 30’s? Monday’s wind will be 10-15mph at Rooster and 20-25mph at Stevenson. Again, the high temp is unclear. There is a shot at very strong west wind some point Tuesday or Wednesday. We’ll keep a close eye on this one.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Now it’s snowy on the trails! We’ll keep the freeze/thaw language just in case the snow goes somewhere (which it won’t any time soon). If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
