Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

We’re seeing snow flurries to start our Mt. Hood Sunday, and the snowfall rate will pick up this evening. The snow level will be around 2000-2500′ all day today. We’ll see trace amounts of snow during the day. A system swings through tonight bringing .5” water value (WV). With the snow level this low, we’ll see 5-6” of relatively dry snow out of this system. Wind today will be W 30 all day, swinging to WSW 30 after midnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Sunday starts off snowy and turns clear in the evening. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, dropping to the surface after midnight. We’ll see about .5” WV between 4am and 1pm, after which the sky will clear. That .5” will translate to 5-6” on the ground. Wind on Sunday will be WSW 30 early, WNW 30 in the afternoon, and NW 25 overnight.

Monday looks partly cloudy to start with snow starting up sometime between 7am and 10am. Light snowfall continues all the way through Tuesday. In a fun twist, the snow level will be less than 1000′ on Monday morning, especially in the Gorge, where the snow level will likely be at the surface. We’ll see .2-.3” WV between 7am and 4pm, for 3-4” of pow-pow. We’ll see another .1-.2” overnight, for 1-3” of champagne pow-pow. Wind on Monday will be SW 10 early, W 15 in the afternoon, and NW 10 overnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Tuesday currently looks partly cloudy with scattered flurries early. The afternoon looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be at the surface, and the wind will be NE 10 or so. Wednesday looks dry. Things get exciting on Thursday morning as a warm and wet system overrides the cold air in place. We’ll probably start off with snow, then see freezing rain, then see a deluge of rain through Friday morning. Holy moly.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Saturday, and you can expect up-and-down west wind at 18-22 from Stevenson to Arlington through 2pm, after which the wind will back off to W 5-10 or so. Sunday brings light westerlies early, followed by W 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles between 10am and 4pm. Monday brings light wind all day long. In the extended forecast, we’re looking at E 15-20 on Tuesday. Wednesday brings east wind at 50-60mph, and Thursday looks like E 40-50.

Random Morning Thoughts

Weather forecasting can be really exciting, especially when I look at the models and say, “Oh shit.” That’s what I did this morning, when the ice storm wish-cast from a few days ago looked even colder and wetter than when it first appeared in the model runs. Thank goodness for my couch-owning friends in Portland – there’s no way I can get home from school on Wednesday night!

Every time I crash at a friend’s house, I think about the website couchsurfing.com. Before we monetized our spare bedrooms, we offered them out to others for free. We gave strangers the gift of a place to crash. You can still do this on Couchsurfing or Warm Showers (the same thing for touring cyclists).

While Airbnb will earn you dollars, these other websites will earn you good karma and gratitude. You’ll have a chance to get to know other humans rather than simply having a financial transaction with them. If you’re doing airbnb, I’d encourage you to also host some couch surfers or warm shower folks. Just give it a shot. See how the experience differs from your airbnb experience. Call it learning. Learning is good. Generosity is good. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Looks like a partly cloudy day today with sprinkles during the day and steadier light to moderate rain after 4pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s all day. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks rainy early and dry in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s all day. Moderate west wind. 79% chance of rainbows. Monday looks cold with wet snow flurries and a max of an inch accumulation at river level. Temps will be in the low 30’s all day, falling below freezing after dark. Watch out for icy roads. Light wind. No rainbows. Way too cold for rainbows. The Big Disaster begins Thursday morning, with snow switching to freezing rain all the way through late Thursday or sometime Friday. Eek.

Road and Mountain Biking

It is, of course, still too wet to ride Post, Hospital or Whoopdee. Syncline is a maybe. We are probably going to lose all the high-elevation rides in the next set of storms, so get it while you can. In road biking news, tomorrow may be dry enough. Tuesday looks dry all day but icy and cold, so that might not work out so well! There is a work party in Post Canyon tomorrow morning at 9am. You should be there, especially if you’re one of those people who’s been riding in the mud and damaging the trails.

Upcoming Events

Coming up today, the HRATS have a work party in Post Canyon. Meet at 9am at Family Man. There’s also Spanish-language yoga at 7am at Flow, a trail run at 8am in Post, and the Cold Lap cross ride at Dirty Fingers at 3pm. I’ve just learned that White Salmon lights their holiday tree this evening. They will have open fires and … yes… s’mores!

Have an awesome day today!
