Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Not much happening out there today on the river other than lots of people in boats chasing 271,000 fish from the fall run. Some of you might be fishing today, and some of you might find just enough wind to get you on the river. We’ll return to our regularly scheduled pattern of (gusty) westerlies Sunday through Tuesday. After that: high pressure, warmer weather, and a switch to easterlies or calm wind, most likely.

Pressures Saturday morning were 30.10/30.10/30.12 for gradients of 0.00 and E 0.02. Warmest temps today set up on the west side of the Cascades. That’ll turn the wind easterly. Look for 15mph or so near Stevenson from mid-morning through mid-afternoon. Viento should come close to 15mph as well. Save Iwash (Rooster) Rock for the sunbathers today – it’s going to be light and variable all day long. Near Hood River, the wind should stay basically calm. East of Lyle, the wind picks up to E 5-10 this afternoon. River flow yesterday was 63-101kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 86F.

A cold front approaches the coast on Sunday as a beefy upper low approaches Vancouver Island (and the Cheezies). Why does this matter? If the timing works out, temps will hold or drop on the west side while the heat low shifts east into the desert. Early wind should be 17-20 or so from Viento to Swell. By late morning, the wind rises to 20-23 and fills in from Stevenson to Mosier. Rowena waits a little longer to join, but that stretch of river won’t be too far behind. Late in the day, we’ll likely see the wind drop to 16-19 from Viento to Hood River, hold at 20-23 near Stevenson, and rise to gusty 21-24 from Mosier to Avery with 16-19 near Rufus. High temp: 83F.

We’ll be post-frontal on Monday. This means the west side will be cool and cloudy to start. East side: sunny and slowly warming. Opening gambit is 15-18 from Viento to The Dalles with clouds and light wind at Stevenson and 11-14 east of The Dalles to Arlington. Don’t drive that far east! Mid-morning westerlies settle in at 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Doug’s and 10-13 near Rufus. Afternoon: 14-17 in the western Gorge with 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus. High temp: 78F.

Looking at Tuesday, we see quite a bit of spread in possible outcomes. Well, let’s clarify. The operational GFS has averages in the upper teens. About 60% of the members of the ECMWF ensemble take gusts into the mid 30’s, which gives us average speeds in the mid 20’s. Uncertainty is present, but the probability of “enough” wind for many is good. After Tuesday, ridging arrives along with warmer weather and lesser wind. Or perhaps easterlies. Probably easterlies. We’ll leave it here for now. Have a fantastic day today!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdee, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. What will it take to open these lands? The END of fire season. Not one rainfall. Multiple heavy rainfalls. Please be patient. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
