Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

A cloudy Saturday on Mt. Hood gives way to a sunny sunday and a snowy Monday. As often happens this time of year, models are backing off on precipitation amounts as the day of precipitation approaches.

For Saturday, expect a cloudy day on the mountain. Low-level instability in the afternoon could trigger thunderstorms (unlikely) or some snow flurries (more likely). The snow level will be 2500′ early and 4000′ later. It’s hard to ascertain how much precipitation might fall; a thunderstorm could drop a lot of snow in a short period of time. Let’s call it somewhere between no snow and a few inches of snow this afternoon and early evening. Wind will be W 20 early, S 10 midday, NW 15 in the evening, and light and variable overnight.

Sunday may start off partly cloudy but will quickly turn clear as high pressure builds. Clouds move in after midnight. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ early and 5500′ in the evening. No precip. Wind: light and variable slowly building to S 15 overnight.

Precipitation returns on Monday, possibly starting as rain but ending as snow. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 4500′ midday, 3000′ in the evening, and 1000′ after midnight, at which point there won’t be any precip around. Current precip forecast: 0.2” water value (WV) during the day, for a trace of rain and up to 2” new snow. Another 0.1” WV falls as snow overnight for another inch. Wind: S 15-20 early, SW 20 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight. Tuesday looks clear and sunny, and so does Wednesday.

Gorge Wind

For the next several days, a series of low pressure systems will dance around offshore, limiting the development of Gorge wind, For Saturday, the day starts with up-and-down and hard to pin down west wind. Max speeds will be found east of The Dalles, where 12-15 is likely this morning. Light and gusty westerlies blow this morning in the western Gorge. Afternoon wind backs off to 5-10 from Stevenson to Arlington. River flow is 165kcfs and temp is 41 degrees.

Sunday starts with W 13-16 from Viento to Arlington with 5-10 near Stevenson. In the afternoon, the wind turns around to E 5-10. Monday starts with E 20-25 from Rooster to Stevenson, goes calm midday, and turns to gusty westerlies at 13-16 in the afternoon along with rain. If the three days just mentioned sound exciting to you, the rest of the week will be exciting too!

Road and Mountain Biking

Syncline report: the lower half of it is dry-not-tacky, amazingly enough. Sounds like Hidden is good. Columbia Hills is also open and rideable and probably full of wildflowers, just like Syncline. However, incoming rain this afternoon will slickify everything, so you’ll want to ride early. Tacky conditions (and hoards of people) return on Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Coming up Saturday: a free bootcamp workout in Sorosis Park at 10am and the Dirty Fingers Cold Lap mixed-surface ride at 3pm. On Sunday, there’s by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 9am. There’s ping pong at the Skamania County Fairgrounds at 10:30, pickup touch rugby for all ages at 11am at the Hood River Marina, and indoor Ultimate Frisbee at 5pm at Horizon Christian School.
