Gorge Wind Forecast

Attention: today is the downwind race for the Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge. This means there will be hundreds of small boats and SUPs between Viento and Hood River. Please yield the right of way to the racers and keep an eye upwind so you don’t interfere. That said, today is the right call for that race: moderate westerlies this morning (Saturday) fade quickly to light westerlies. Sunday looks light, and the wind dies off completely on Monday.

Details for Saturday: a cloudy start to the day in Portland turns sunny as a brief ridgy thing moves across the area and an upper low moves towards Oregon. Models suggest that the wind will back off as temps equalize across the Cascades this afternoon. So, with .07 (PDX-DLS) to start the day, we’ll see 16-19 between Viento and Swell with 13-16 east and west of there. Areas east of Mosier will back off to 10-13 or less as the day goes on. The GFS suggests the western Gorge will back off to 10-13. I think we’ll see a slow fade from 16-19 to 11-14 between Stevenson and Mosier.

Looking at Sunday, we have an upper low overhead, which will squash gradients. The GFS likes W 7-11 all day from Stevenson to Swell. In an interesting twist, the Euro likes 15-18. Given the setup, I’m leaning towards the lesser of the two forecasts. The eastern Gorge is likely to see light easterlies on Sunday, which will probably push wildfire smoke into the Gorge. Add in a slight chance of thunder in the afternoon to complete the picture.

Monday starts off with light westerlies, goes calm, and switches to light easterlies. By light, I mean less than 10. As of right now, we’re looking at light and variable wind Tuesday with a chance of E 10-15 for a couple hours midday, but there is model disagreement. Models are closer together later in the week, liking the idea of a trough pushing inland. This would give us strong westerlies on Thursday.

BONUS: Jones Saturday: 11-14. Sunday: 13-16. Monday: LTW. Sauvie’s Saturday: 11-14. Sunday: 13-16. Monday: 13-16. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: 15-20/15-20/25-30, NW swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Sunday: W5-10/W5-10/N 25-30, NW 5′ @ 8. Monday: W5-10/W5-10/N25-30, NW 5′ @ 8.
