Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning skiers, riders, and Nordic folks. Today’s our last day of snowfall on the mountain for at least a few days. If you’re heading up, take the forecast into account: a winter storm warning for the metro area and a blizzard warning for the Gorge. Temps on the mountain are below zero at Teacup and Meadows Nordic and in the 20’s at Skibowl and upper elevations of Meadows and Timberline.

Saturday will be snowy all day and into the evening. The snow level will be 0′ with temps ranging from -4F (Meadows Nordic) to 25F (base of Skibowl). About 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day for 4-5” powder. Overnight, another 0.8” WE is forecast for 7-9” additional potentially denser snow with a very, very slight chance of mixed wintry precipitation for a period; the incoming system is above freezing, but it’s encountering a pool of very cold air. Wind today will be W 20 in the morning, S 15-20 in the afternoon, and NNW 20-25 overnight.

Sunday will be partly cloudy. The free air freezing level will be 0′ all day with temps all over the place depending on elevation. Higher up, temps will be in the upper teens to low 20’s early and mid to upper 20’s later. Wind: NNW 20-25 during the day and NW 15-20 overnight.

Monday will be mostly clear. The free air freezing level will be 0′ all day and will rise to 8000′ overnight. Temps will, once again, be all over the place. Very cold way down low and warmer up high. Wind: NW 15-20 early becomes variable to 10 in the afternoon and SW 10 overnight. Clear weather Tuesday morning gives way to mixed wintry precip overnight. Models are all over the place with this, so let’s leave it for now. Have fun on the slopes today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! NWS issued a blizzard warning for the Gorge today, and the wind part sure is verifying. We’ll stick with nuking easterlies for the next three days. For Saturday, we start with 52 at Iwash (Rooster), 41 at Stevenson, 28 at Viento, and E 17-20 all the way east to Arlington. Too bad it’s 10F! River flow yesterday was 78-109kcfs, river temp is 41.7F, and high temp forecast is… 10F. Sunday starts with 50-60 at Iwash and fades to 40-45. Stevenson: 35-40 fading to 30-35. High temp: 20F. Monday starts and finishes with 60mph at Iwash and 40mph at Stevenson. Next chance for above-freezing temps: sometime between Thursday and next weekend.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
