Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Saturday morning! Plentiful marine clouds combine with desert sunshine today for the potential for the Gorge to beat the weather models. That said, there’s not much in the way of gradients this morning: .03 and .03. We’ll see 13-16 in most locations this morning with 5-10 under the clouds (except at Viento, which is always windy). Areas east of Mosier will quickly fade to calm. The western Gorge will slowly build to 17-20. ‘Western Gorge’ means Stevenson to Moiser today, with the strongest wind not happening until late in the day.

Sunday looks less windy for much of the day, but a trough approaching the coast has the potential to drive a late-day bump by sending colder, denser air into the metro area. Timing is everything. Sunday starts calm. Cascade Locks, Stevenson, and Home Valley will probably see 10-13 from mid-morning on through mid afternoon. Other locations will remain calm and hot. The wind will start to build mid-afternoon in the Hood River and Viento area, picking up to 14-17. If the timing works out, the wind will pick up to 22-25 after 4pm from Stevenson to Hood River with Swell likely being up-and-down. Headed home and can’t wait for it? Try Jones Beach for 24-28.

Monday looks quite interesting. A weak front combines with a trough along the coast for a solid dawn patrol. Afternoon wind may be affected by the course of an incoming upper low. That said, the temperature differences on Monday will be extreme: 50 degrees from the coast to the desert and 23 degrees from Portland to the desert. That gives ample support from the desert heat low in the afternoon. Translation: Dawn Patrol at 22-26 from Viento to Mosier (more possible at Mosier). Steady build to 27-32 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon with 23-26 at Roosevelt and Arlington. Models agree on 23-26 for Tuesday.

Long range.. models don’t agree on anything except warmer weather. The ECMWF builds a four-corner high into our deserts, driving temps into the 90’s and triple digits. That kills the wind. The GFS keeps the flow onshore with temps in the 80’s and 90’s. So, you can basically ignore any forecast longer-range than Tuesday!

BONUS: Jones Saturday: 7-10. Sunday: 24-28. Monday: 13-16. Sauvie’s Saturday: 10-13. Sunday: 10-13. Monday: 13-16. Coast: not really anything for the next three days. Waves 2-3 feet.

Road and Mountain Biking

High Prairie down to 450 is open, according to Strava. I received a report from Dirty Fingers that multiple known people have ridden Gunsight. Hospital Hill now seems to be a one-tick-bite-per-ride zone. That’s for humans, not for dogs, which are currently allowed, by the way. The now-open Borderline (133) trail in Post has 1-3” dust on it. SAD! We are at Fire Level 2 now, which means motos on Hood River County land are only allowed in Post Canyon. Middle Mountain and Pinemont are closed to motorized use until the fire level drops. HRATS have a brushing work party meeting at Family Man at 9am today (Saturday).

Upcoming Events

Today’s a busy day for events. The Hood River Area Trail Stewards have a work party meeting at Family Man in Post Canyon at 9. Bring loppers and other brush-clearing tools and come work for a few hours.

There’s a garden work party at Pacific Hermitage today at 1. That follows a 10:30am potluck and precedes a 3pm tea party. Today’s the Wild Woman 50k and trail relay in Trout Lake, a race for women only. In windsport world, Northwave has a jibing and rigging clinic with the Gorge’s looping grandpa, Jim Oakes, at 9am today. Big Winds has kite demos at the Event Site and Windance has kite, foil, and board demos today and tomorrow at the Sandbar and Event Site. Big Winds has free demos of Faraday E-Bikes tomorrow.
