Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Happy weekend! A little bit of snow today is followed by perhaps some mixed precip tonight. That leads into a day of much-needed heavy snowfall on Sunday. Lighter snowfall continues into Monday before a brief break in the action through mid-morning Tuesday. After that – more snow with a storm-skiing, dumping day possible on Wednesday.

Saturday’s starting off just cold enough for snow at 5000′. It sounds like there was a bit of new snow up high but no new on the lowest slopes. That leaves us with wet snow up high and wet granular snow (which I rather like!) down low. During the day today, the snow level will rise from 4500′ to 5500′ in the evening. It falls back to 4000′ after midnight. Daytime precip forecast is 0.3” water equivalent (WE) for 1-3” dense new snow mostly after 10am. Just a trace is forecast in the warmer hours overnight. That’ll probably be mixed precip. Wind: S 15-3 all day and all night becoming SE 15 after midnight.

Sunday will be snowy all day. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. Models still disagree on the amount of snowfall – they’re calling for 0.5” to 1.5” WE for the 24 hour period. For now, let’s go with 0.4” to 0.6” WE during the day for 4-6” new snow of average quality. Overnight, thanks to orographics, the snowfall intensity picks up. Expect 0.7” to 1.0” WE for 7-11” of decent-quality snow. Wind will be SE 15 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and W 30 after midnight.

Lighter snowfall continues on Monday and tapers off in the afternoon. Overnight, the sky will clear for a short period before clouding back over by Tuesday sunrise. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day. Call that 3-4” increasingly dry snow. A trace is forecast overnight. Wind: W 30 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

Dry weather Tuesday morning adds snowfall mid to late morning with the snow level no higher than 3500′. Heavy snowfall, up to a foot of new, is forecast during the day on Wednesday. After that, the weather turns a bit cooler and a bit less wet for a while. Deets are still not clear. Have a great Saturday!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Please do not ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
