Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

We didn’t get much snow last night, and there’s not a lot in the next couple of days, but you’ll want to stay abreast of the forecast for Tuesday night. For Saturday, Mt. Hood will see flurries in the morning and steadier light snowfall in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be about 1000′ in the morning and 1500′ in the afternoon. Upper elevation air will warm after midnight, but it will take until daybreak on Sunday for the snow level to hit 8000′. Snow accumulation on Saturday will be an inch or so, maybe two at the far extreme end of possibilities. Wind will be NW 25 in the morning, NW 15 in the afternoon, and NW 30 after midnight.

Upper elevation air will warm on Sunday morning, taking the snow level to 8000′ for the daylight hours, 6500′ late afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. The mountain will see 1/10” to 1/4” precip during the day, maybe starting as wet snow but switching to drizzle. We may see a precip break in the afternoon, depending on the path of the incoming storm system (currently forecast to miss us to the north). Wind Sunday will be NW 30 early, WNW 35-40 for much of the day, and W 30 overnight.

Monday starts off with light snowfall and becomes dry in the afternoon. The snow level will be 5000′ for most of the day and 8000′ after midnight. Mt. Hood will receive .1-.2” water value (WV) in the form of snow, for an inch or two before 4pm. Wind will be W 35 early, W 20 in the afternoon, and WSW 25 overnight.

Tuesday looks mostly dry, above-freezing, and windy. A stronger system on Tuesday night carries the potential for 12-24” of new snow with very strong wind – that will lead to significant wind-loading of leeward slopes for the Wednesday morning ski session. Looking long-range, we go back into an extended dry spell with warmer temps above than below.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m feeling very grateful and lucky today as I look at my torn-apart living room. I have such nice friends who help me with big projects: home remodels and dump runs. It really feels lovely to be able to ask for and receive help.

Receiving help from others can be a tough pill to swallow. Most of us like to help others. It feels good, right? But many of us feel guilty or ashamed to be on the receiving end. That’s weird, right, given that we appreciate the opportunity to improve the lives of our loved ones?

If you’re someone who struggles with receiving help, ask yourself this: “Where did I learn that asking for help is something that should result in negative emotions?” Expecting your experience to shift completely is a lot to ask (I still feel a little guilty when I ask for big things), but having a more nuanced and complex response will allow you to give and receive help more freely. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

Due to the un-freezing of the air, Post Canyon is now closed to all users. The trails are too delicate to ride right now. While not officially closed, Syncline, Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are all in the same boat. If you ride them, you will do major trail damage and also coat your bike and yourself in mud. NOT COOL! Try road riding today (sunshine east of Hood River, most likely) or gravel grinding (also sunny).

Upcoming Events

Today is the Locals Only sale at Big Winds – screaming deals on a good portion of the items in the shop. It’ll also be a great opportunity to socialize. Coming up Sunday, there’s by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 9am, ping pong at the Armory at 10am, meditation at Flow at 11am, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Waterfront Park at 11am, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm, and restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm.
