Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Mt. Hood is starting out clear and cold for Saturday, meaning there’s going to be some epic corn snow all over the mountain today. Clear sky in the morning may give way to partly cloudy sky this afternoon, but there should still be plenty of solar power to bring out the corn. The free air freezing level will be 5000′ this morning and 4000′ this afternoon. Wind will also help keep the snow from softening too much: NW 25 in the morning, NW 20 in the afternoon, and NE 10 overnight.

Sunday sees another hard snap to the snow as clear sky and dry air combine for excellent radiational cooling. Scattered clouds may move in during the afternoon for partly cloudy conditions. The free air freezing level will be 4000′. Wind: NE 10 all day and ENE 10 in the afternoon. Monday looks sunny during the day with thin high clouds in the afternoon and clear sky overnight. FAF: 4000′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Wind: ENE 10 early, E 10 int eh afternoon, and NE 20 overnight. No snow in the forecast, sorry!

Gorge Wind

Offshore high pressure over the next few days combines with various inland concoctions for a variety of wind experiences. Before we get to that, CGW2 has a work party today from 9 to 1 at Blackberry Beach in Cascade Locks. Partake in the work party, and you can partake in free hot dogs from the CGW2 grill. Once you do that, it’ll be plenty windy to get on the river. Morning clouds and showers in the west limit the wind to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River (minus Viento, which is always 20-25). East of Hood River, the wind quickly climbs to 25-29 all the way to Boardman. Showers end in the western Gorge by noon. In response, the wind picks up to gusty 18-23 from Stevenson to Hood River.

Looking at Sunday’s models is a little confusing, as offshore high pressure drives morning westerlies. Afternoon temps equalize between the desert and the metro area, hinting at lighter wind. Let’s go with 12-15 from Stevenson to Arlington early Sunday. Afternoon wind dies off and turns light easterly from Rowena to Arlington. Western Gorge wind will likely hold to light westerlies, but it’s really hard to say.

Monday starts with a heat low along the coast. Result: easterlies at 10-15 near Rooster, Stevenson, and Viento. That low shifts eastward in the afternoon. Timing will be everything, and won’t result in much, no matter the timing. Likeliest scenario: light easterlies Monday afternoon. Tuesday looks light and variable. Just a heads up: I’ll be on vacation for about 10 days starting Wednesday.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Jones Saturday: 19-23. Sunday: nope. Monday: 18-22. Sauvie’s Saturday: 16-19. Sunday: 5-8. Monday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: 10-15/25-30/35+, NW swell 6′ at 8 seconds. Sunday: 20-25/25-30/35+, W 7′ @ 9. Monday: 15-20/20-25/30-35, W 5′ @ 9.

Road and Mountain Biking

Syncline is probably getting dry, but it sure is green and filled with flowers! You’ll want to get it soon before the poison oak and ticks overrun the place. Post is … BROWNPOW! Open top to bottom. The new climbing trail, Eldorado, is nothing short of awesome! Whoopdee is brownpow and has wildflowers, and same goes for Columbia Hills. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. There is a parking area 0.5 miles farther down the road. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
