Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Saturday, and slopeside fun starts under clear sky. Cold air moving in from the NE quickly creates some orographic clouds and snowfall midday, just for a few hours. Once the cold, dry Continental air fully arrives, we’ll be back to sunshine through Monday. The next chance of snow is next Friday morning, but models don’t agree on the amounts yet.

Saturday is starting off clear as a bell. Snow arrives mid-morning with the arctic air. Expect temps to drop during the day and fall to the single digits for night skiing tonight. The snow level will be 1500′ this morning and 0′ in the afternoon with the free air freezing level falling to 0′ all across the land tonight. Models do not predict this setup well, so let’s go with 0.1” to 0.4” water equivalent today. That’s 1-4” new snow. Wind: S 10-15 (unexpected!) this morning, NE 10 this afternoon, and building to E 40 overnight.

Expect a shutdown or near-shutdown at Timberline on Sunday thanks to the easterlies. Lifts at other resorts could be affected too, but Timberline takes the brunt of east wind. Check before you go. The weather will be clear and frigid with bitterly cold wind chill. Expect temps to hold in the single digits all day. The wind will be E 40 knots in the morning, E 30 in the afternoon, and E 10-15 overnight. If you do head up, cover exposed skin to protect yourself from frostbite. Wear windproof undies so you don’t freeze your todger.

Monday starts out clear and cold and ends warmer and sunny. The free air freezing level will be 0′ near Mt. Hood all day with temps in the teens in the morning and 20’s in the afternoon. Wind: E 10-15 in the morning, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight.

High clouds move in and out through Thursday, and temps warm above freezing at 5000′. Models hint at the next weather system (snow) arriving on Friday with additional snow through the weekend. Have a fabulous Saturday on the slopes!

Gorge Wind Forecast

The fun mid-winter westerly streak is over, and we’re going back to frigid, ripping east wind. Saturday starts with westerlies but quickly switches to easterlies as cold air swings in from Canada. The wind builds to 30-35 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, 5-15 near Hood River, and 15-20 east of The Dalles. High temp: 44F and falling during the day. River flow is 110-142kcfs, and river temp is 40F. Sunday starts with strong easterlies at all elevations which makes the wind strength on the river tricky to predict. Temps will be below freezing all day, so maybe it’s not super important? Anyway, Expect 30ish at Stevenson all day with 30-50 (probably the low end) at Rooster and 10-15 east of Swell. High temp: 31F. Monday starts with 30-40 at Rooster and 20-30 at Stevenson. Afternoon: 20-25 at Stevenson and 25-35 at Rooster. East of Swell: light and variable all day. High temp: 28F under sunny sky.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
There’s a giant, all-hands-on-deck HRATS Family Man cleanup happening on Saturday, 1/28 from 10am-3pm. Second chance: Feb 4th. Please bring wheelbarrows and snacks. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Be thoughtful about your riding choices as we enter this dry period. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
