Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Saturday, everyone! It’s KB4C day at the Event Site, and it’s also the weekend of the Gorge Outrigger Canoe Race. Highway 14 remains closed due to the Tunnel 5 Fire, and Swell/Hatch are inaccessible at this time unless you come from upwind or downwind. Today’s the day to try your normal sport from a different location, and it’s also a day to switch it up and try a downwinder or travel session. Remember that the Event Site is for KB4C and only for KB4C this weekend.

We kick off Saturday with pressures of 29.98/29.82/29.77 for gradients of 0.16 and 0.05. Gradient-only forecast says you should be able to shred anywhere between Stevenson at Rufus at some point today. Diving in a bit deeper, we have 26-29 from Viento to Swell and probably Mosier for the Dawn Patrol session. Hood River will quickly fill in at 26-29. Add in Stevenson at 20-23 by mid to late morning. Models suggest widespread heating will knock the wind down a bit this afternoon; expect 24-27 from Stevenson to Doug’s with building wind at Rufus. Afternoon wind drops to 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River and spreads at 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington. River flow yesterday was 106-156kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

Another windy day is on tap for Sunday. Instability and a weak/dry weather system approaching during the day could cause some disruption. That disruption could be mitigated by reinforcing cool air flowing into the metro area during the day. Expect 25-28 from Viento to Hood River for Dawn Patrol with 10-15 at Stevenson and 18-21 east of Hood River to Arlington. Westerlies eventually build to 27-30 from Stevenson all the way to Arlington. High temp: 88F.

A beast of a marine push on Monday combines with heat in the desert and strengthening offshore high pressure for a monster of a day on the river. Expect 29-33 averages pretty much all day long, pretty much everywhere between Viento and Threemile. It’s possible Stevenson could remain under the clouds. If so, the wind will be less there but also gusty. High temp: 78F. Models keep us in the mid-20’s, mostly west of The Dalles, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Have fun out there today, and good luck to all the folks doing KB4C!

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. When’s it gonna happen? Who the heck knows? Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, Underhill, Cedar Creek, Cooks Meadow, 450, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Fifteenmile is rideable. Super Duper Connector is open. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. Lewis River, Falls Creek, and Plains of Abraham are all open. The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is open as is the mixed surface Sleeping Beauty/8810 loop. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

You have an unusual solstice-week opportunity. With the clouds and the chance of drizzle and the cool temps, you have a perfect opportunity to sow seeds. Replace your lettuce. Drop in another round of cilantro. Add some arugula. Carve out a little trench for some carrots. Water them, and you might just get away with once-a-day watering through Monday. It’s also a decent time to add some plants to your garden. They’ll prefer this gentle start to a harsh, hot-weather transplant. Happy gardening.
