Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Well, this is a nice change, isn’t it? Clouds, drizzle… For the next couple of days, the wind forecast will be tricky thanks to persistent and widespread atmospheric instability. This uncertainty is reflected in the ensembles; there’s a wide spread of possible outcomes presented. Better agreement exists on Monday and Wednesday (you may remember that Tuesday was previously the target day) for solid westerlies.

As you may have guessed by looking out the window at the clouds and drizzle, not much will happen wind-wise on Saturday. Expect light wind this morning with perhaps 10mph this afternoon from Lyle to Rufus. Elsewhere: light all day. In case you were wondering, the pressures this morning were 30.09/30.06/30.04 for gradients of 0.03 and 0.02. River flow yesterday was 94-151kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 85F but will probably end up being lower.

A disturbance in the Force (a trough moving inland, to be precise) is the trigger for increased westerlies on Sunday. It’s also a potential trigger for thunderstorms. That makes this forecast rather unreliable, so I ain’t pretending I can get it right. We’ll try for 14-17 from Viento to Arlington in the morning. That shifts to 13-16 west of Hood River and 16-19 from Hood river to Rufus by late morning. Afternoon: 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River with gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus and 19-22 near Arlington. Again, thunderstorms and instability could drive down wind quality and wind speed and forecast reliability.

Marine air pushes in to the west side on Monday, and this sets up a more reliable day. East of the Cascades, instability will still be present. Expect dawn patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 to the east. Mid-morning wind rises to 23-26 from Viento to Mosier with 20-23 at Stevenson and from Lyle to Rufus. Afternoon: 25-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 22-25 at Arlington. High temp: 82F.

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
