Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday, and it’s one of those days where all you have to do is Go Outside and Look At the River (GOLAR). With clouds in Portland, 1034mb high pressure off the coast, and a 20 degree temp spread today between Portland and Arlington, this one’s a darn sure thing. Dawn Patrol at 23-26 gives way to late morning westerlies at 28-32 from Viento to Rufus (too much current) and fills in to Arlington this afternoon. Stevenson will be in the clouds early with light wind. It’ll join in this afternoon with 23-26 or so.

River temps is 57 degrees (currently warmer than the air) and flow is 494kcfs, once again huge and too much for Rufus. Keep in mind that a raft of logs escaped Bingen yesterday midday. Logs and bundles of logs may still be floating in the river and in the eddy lines.

Tomorrow starts off with a nice marine layer in Portland and sunshine in the desert. A trough approaching in the afternoon will destabilize our wind field, making it gusty and unreliable. In other words, get out in the morning for the best results. The day starts with 22-26 from Viento to Mosier, climbs to 24-28 late morning, and then gets gusty and unpredictable with 20-25 from Stevenson to Rufus with 10-13 east of there.

Atmospheric dynamics mess with the wind on Wednesday. An approaching trough kicks a wave through in the afternoon for gusty 13-16 or so all day. Another system approaches on Thursday. Models disagree a big on the wind strength, but the most likely scenario at this time appears to be gusty 18-22 early and gusty 25-29 in the afternoon, concentrated in the western Gorge.
