Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Today’s your last almost-no-wind day, and it’s sure going to be a hot one! Westerlies return tomorrow (Tuesday) and stick around through at least Friday. After that, model agreement falls apart. The weekend forecast is all over the map right now, so let’s leave it. As for today… SUP on a mountain lake sounds pretty good. The higher in elevation you go, the happier you’re going to be!

Monday starts with pressures of 29.92/29.99/30.00 for gradients of E0.05 and E0.01. We’ll have easterlies at 14-17mph for a few hours this morning between Rooster Rock and Viento. The wind drops early afternoon and ends up at less than 10mph in that Rooster-Viento zone. Near Hood River and to the east, the wind will be less than 5mph out of the east all day. River flow yesterday was 104-196kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 102F.

There won’t be any wind to start the day on Tuesday, but don’t let that fool you. As the heat low shifts east and the desert’s heat game outpaces the city, westerlies pick up. By late morning, we’ll have 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River. Westerlies slowly build. They’ll max out in the evening with 18-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles. High temp: 103F.

Wednesday looks equally hot. Westerlies start the day at 11-14 from Viento to the Hatchery. They quickly rise to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River. Midday heating may cause a dip to the mid teens, but the wind will return at 17-20 late afternoon. High temp: 99F. As of today, Thursday looks like 24-27, and Friday looks like 26-30. As I said previously, the weekend forecast is literally all over the place. Some ensemble members call for zero wind. Some call for gusts to the 40’s. Taking a stab at the forecast now makes no sense, so that’s it for today. Stay cool!

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
