Gorge Wind Forecast

You may have noticed that it’s quite cloudy this morning in Hood River and that there’s light drizzle falling in the west. We’ll see the clouds slowly burn off today, but it’s likely the Hood River area will remain partly cloudy. If you’re looking for strong wind today, you’ll want to jump on it early; a trough exiting to the east and high pressure building from the west will cause afternoon gradients to decrease (and at .07 and .09, they’re not all that strong to start!).

So… for the first half of the day, at least, the Stevenson to Hood River section of the Columbia will be cloudy, resulting in gusty 12-17. Mosier to Doug’s will see 16-19 or so for the first few hours. Avery to Arlington will have 27-31, but that’s already starting to drop. The wind should level out at 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus this afternoon with 20-24 at Arlington and gusty 12-17 under the clouds in the west.

High pressure builds inland on Tuesday, minimizing cross-Cascade gradients. For most of the day, we’ll have W 5-10 from Stevenson to Hood River with calm to light wind east of the Bridge. The wind will pick up late afternoon to 13-16 or so from Stevenson to Mosier.

A desert low combines with offshore high pressure and low clouds in Portland on Wednesday for a windy day. If you have time Wednesday, 10-2, CGWA has a beach cleanup at Viento. The wind quality could drop in the afternoon as a front approaches offshore. That said… we start with 12-15 from Stevenson to Moiser. The wind quickly builds to 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 19-22 at Rufus and 5-10 east of there. As of right now, we’re looking at Dawn Patrol at 24-28 on Thursday with max wind of 27-31, probably in the western Gorge, but subject to change. A note about the weekend: there’s a CGWA swap meet Saturday at Luhr Jensen and one Sunday at Windance.

BONUS: Jones Monday: 5. Tuesday: 16-19. Wednesday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Monday: 8-11. Tuesday: 13-16. Wednesday: 13-16. Coast (north/central/south). Monday: W5/NW5/25-40, W swell 6′ @ 12 seconds. Tuesday: 20-25/2-30/30+, W 7′ @ 10. Wednesday: 15-20/20-25/30+, W 5′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

Some of us, myself included, are “driven”. We gain a sense of competence by learning new things, getting faster, being stronger, and just generally creating change. That is totally okay, and it’s also okay to not be that way. The key is being aware of what that process does for you and whether you are able to settle into its opposite.

What happens if you allow your life to be stable and relatively changeless for a while. How do you react if you don’t take on new jobs, don’t try new hobbies, or simply enjoy the level of expertise you already have. Do ya get anxious? Excellent! Try and understand why, and once you understand, go back to what you were doing before if you so desire.

Here’s the thing – what you’re doing is neither good nor bad (as long as it isn’t hurting yourself or others). It’s just something to understand. Why? Because understanding gives you more control over your life, more ability to decrease your suffering. May you be at ease. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

High Prairie down to 450 is open, according to Strava. Still only have one attempt on Gunsight two weeks ago that took 1 hour and 48 minutes, 48 minutes longer than it should have. So.. probably trees and snow, but possible to get through in some way… No guarantees! The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is next weekend – fully supported riding in Trout Lake, including a 105 mile loop and a $10 family loop.

Upcoming Events

Events today start with a donation yoga class at Flow at 8:30. There’s meditation at Trinity natural Medicine at noon. For the after work crowd, there’s a stress reduction class at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30, yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6, kickball at Bingen’s Daubenspeck Park at 6, and community Zumba at 6:30 at Mid Valley Elementary.

Events for the rest of the week include a beach cleanup at Viento on Wednesday from 10-2, sponsored by Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association. You’ve got another opportunity to try E-bikes for free next Saturday when Big Winds has demos of Gazelle bikes. Hood River’s Waterfront Park has the Pride and Prosper wellness festival on Saturday with a 5k footrace, and Windance has a swap meet on Sunday morning. There’s also a swap meet at Luhr Jensen on Saturday morning. Yes, both. Saturday is the annual Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour with supported rides varying in length from the 11 mile family ride to the 105 mile infinity ride.
