The Forecast

CoronaChat

Having a purpose in life is an important support for self-esteem and happiness. Coronavirus has taken that away from many people. If you’re one of them, you may want to consider other ways you can build a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Think small here. Giant problems can be addressed with tiny solutions.

Filling that need for meaning is, in part, a matter of perspective. For example, if you think it’s a burden to be home-schooling your kids, it will be a burden. If you figure out a way to delight in that (even though it’s difficult, time-consuming, and yes, burdensome), you’ll be more at ease.

Now, there are lots of awesome ways to create a purpose. For example, you can be like Maui Meyer and spearhead a local initiative to create PPE for medical providers. Major kudos there. You can also do something smaller, like picking up groceries for a medically compromised or elderly neighbor. Generosity and service will go a long ways towards protecting your mental health.

Another way to protect it is to feel like you’re succeeding at something. Pick anything. You could learn to draw, play the ukulele, or, if you’re me, you could decide you’ll learn to twerk. The point of this activity is to do something new. Pick something possible, and give it a shot. You’ve probably got time on your hands. Add to your Netflix binge with a new skill that will last a lifetime. Be safe, be healthy. #stayhomesavelives.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All ski areas and Nordic areas are closed at this time. Meadows and Skibowl have announced that they are not allowing uphill travel. If you attempt to do so, you are trespassing. No hiking for turns. Timberline hasn’t said that, but they have a giant reader board in the parking lot. It says “Stay Home”. I’d encourage you to consider staying out of the backcountry as well – if something happens, you will become a drain on resources as Search and Rescue teams, doctors, and possibly LifeFlight get involved. In case you are driving over the passes or live above sea level, here is a mountain weather forecast for you.

For Monday, lots of snow will fall. The snow level will be 2500′ all day, falling to 1500′ overnight. About 0.9” to 1.2” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 9-12” of snow. Another 0.7” to 0.9” WV falls overnight, for 7-10” of additional snow. Wind will be SW 35-55 during the day, SW30-50 in the evening, and W 35-40 after midnight. If you’re driving over the passes, be prepared for blowing snow, chains-required conditions, and limited visibility.

Snow continues on Tuesday with intermittent sunbreaks during the day and a short period of clearing overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. About 0.4” WV falls during the day, for 4” of new. Another 0.2” WV falls overnight, for 2-3” of dry, light snow. Wind will be S 35-40 during the day, WSW 25 in the afternoon, and SW 15-25 after midnight.

Steady snowfall Wednesday morning gives way to flurries and sunbreaks. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. About 0.4” WV is forecast for the daytime, for 4-5” of snow. Another 0.1” WV arrives overnight, for another inch. Wind: SW 15-25 int eh morning, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 25-30 overnight. Mostly clear sky on Thursday gives way to another round of snow on Friday with unsettled weather forecast for the weekend.

Gorge Wind Forecast

First, a public service announcement. All Oregon and Washington State Parks are closed at this time. All Port of Hood River waterfront access is closed at this time. The Army Corps has closed Roosevelt Park and John Day Dam access. They have also closed boat ramps. Swell City is also closed. This is an order to obey. It’s not one to sneak around and find a way to get on the river instead. That’s especially for you locals – set a good example so you don’t have folks coming down here from Covid-19 epicenters to play on the river and shop at our stores.

For Monday, the day starts with light and variable wind. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 13-16 in the west with gusty 24-29 from The Dalles to Arlington. River flow is 85,700cfs and temp is 44 degrees. Tuesday starts with W 6-9 all along the river. By midday, we’ll have 10-13 in the west and 17-20 from Biggs to Boardman. Afternoon westerlies rise to gusty 22-25 from Rowena to Arlington. Wednesday starts out calm. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier with light and variable wind east of there.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

All trails and sno-parks in the Mt. Hood National Forest, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area are closed. While Post Canyon trails may be open as of this morning, you are not allowed to park at the bottom of Post or anywhere else in the trail system. You must ride there from somewhere else. Given the amount of rain we’ve had overnight, the trails will be too muddy to ride anyway. So, skip it today! The Mosier Twin Tunnels trail is closed. If you want to ride a bike, please do so on the road where 1) social distancing is possible and 2) you are less likely to get injured and put a strain on the medical system.
