Gorge Wind Forecast
Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!
Yesterday’s wind performed about as expected despite the addition of clouds and showers out east. We’ll see much less in the way of wind over the next three days, with your best shot being today east of The Dalles. Rain shuts everything down on Tuesday, and moderate westerlies return Wednesday afternoon.
For Monday, you’ll find 13-16 or so all day in the western Gorge. Stevenson languishes in the morning, but catches up mid-afternoon. East of The Dalles, you’ll find westerlies at 24-27 pretty much all day – some locations will need a couple hours to catch up, but they eventually will. Remember that Roosevelt is CLOSED due to windstorm damage. Please don’t go there or you risk repercussions for all of us. River flow today is 382kcfs (too much for the Rufus stretch), and temp is 56 degrees.
Tuesday will be rainy all the way to The Dalles. Most of the day will also be calm. The only exception is a few hours midday when launches between The Dalles and Biggs will see 12-15. That rainy system moves through Tuesday leading to a dry day on Wednesday. Light easterlies start the day. After noon, the wind turns around and builds to 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles.
Models are far from agreeing on the wind for the next of the week. While the operational GFS gives us gusty 25-28 on Thursday and 30-35 + on Friday, the ensemble members are far from agreeing on this. Let’s cross our fingers about Friday. Don’t clear the calendar yet!

Mt. Hood Meadows is now allowing uphill travel within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here.
