Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Dry weather is forecast for the next ten days or so, and models are hinting at warm, wet weather after that for at least a few days. Details this far out, of course, are far from clear. One thing to keep in mind is that these dry, cold high pressure systems often take longer to dissipate than models originally forecast. In other words, it could be dry longer than 10 days! In the meantime, Timberline has two lifts for you, tons of people have been hiking at Meadows, and Teacup has about 7k groomed. Next grooming day is Wednesday.

Monday will be sunny on the mountain. The free air freezing level is right at 5000′ this morning and will rise to 8000′ as an inversion develops today. Wind: E 25mph all day long. Tuesday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ with 5000′ temps rising from +_3C in the morning to +7C in the afternoon and +9C overnight. Wind: ESE 25 in the morning, SE 15 in the afternoon, and variable to 5 overnight. Wednesday will also be sunny and dry. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ all day with temps at 5000′ near +9C in the morning, +11C in the afternoon, and +4C overnight. Wind: variable to 5 in the morning becoming W 5 in the afternoon and variable to 15 overnight.

If we look deep into the future, about 10 days out, we see strong signs of precipitation in the Euro and the GFS. We also see strong hints that temps at 850mb (about 5000′), will be greater than +1C. In other words, there’s a good chance that at least the beginning of this next wet cycle will not the be precipitation we are looking for. Continue with dryland training exercises, please!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies are scheduled every single day for the next week or so. The cold pool will be deep enough that easterlies will spill over the Cascades, and this will decrease the speed of the wind on the river. That said, it will be plenty windy. Monday sees easterlies rise to 40mph or so near Rooster, 30-35 near Stevenson, and 20-25 near Viento. The wind holds all day. River flow readings are 99-142kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 47F. Tuesday looks similar, and the wind should hold all day. High temp: 50F. Wednesday looks about the same to start. Afternoon wind drops to 30-35 near Rooster, 25-30 near Stevenson, and 15-20 near Viento. High temp: 50F. Very strong easterlies are forecast Thursday and Friday before a possible lull, or at least decrease, next weekend.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
There are two events on November 19th. There’s a work party on the Indian Creek Trail. That’s 9am-noon. Email [email protected] to register. Also the 19th, at 6pm, Windance has Ladies Night for wind sports. All people who don’t identify as cis-males are welcome to attend (eg: non-binary people, cis-females, trans women, two spirit, etc).

Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Cycling

Now we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
