Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

What we could use right now is about six feet of snow from 3000′ on up to get all the resorts open. It’s not looking like that will happen this week. For Monday, Mt. Hood will see light snowfall during the day and partly cloudy sky with occasional flurries overnight. The snow level will be 2000′-2500′ all day and 4000′ after midnight. About .1-.2” water value (WV) will grace the flanks of the mountain, giving us 1-3” of new snow during the day and a trace overnight. Wind will be W 25 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 overnight.

A wetter weather system moves through on Tuesday, but the snow level will fluctuate quite a bit with this one. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 5500′ midday, and 2500′ in the evening. About .7” WV falls between 4am and 4pm, which will probably give us 3-5” of wet snow. Another .3”+ WV falls in orographic (terrain-enhanced) snow showers overnight. The mountain will get 3-5” of snow from that – kinda hard to judge the orographic effect, but it usually brings more snow than the models predict. Wind on Tuesday will be SW 15 early and NW 30 overnight (causing those orographic snow accumulations).

Wednesday looks partly to mostly cloudy with flurries. The snow level will be 2500′ all day and 6000′ after midnight. About .1-.2” WV falls as snow during the day, for an inch or two of accumulation. Wind Wednesday will be NW 25 in the morning, light and variable in the afternoon, and SW 15 after midnight.

Thursday’s forecast currently calls for another weather system to swing through. As of right now, the snow level with this one looks like 5500′. That’s too high to make a difference in base area snowpacks. A small shift in the track could change this, so I’m going to hold off on making any solid predictions at this point.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s another long Monday in my world. I’m going to leave you to your thoughts today. Have an awesome week!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Your best bet at this point is Syncline – Post, Whoopdee, Nestor, Hospital and Underwood are all probably too muddy to ride. That means you will damage the trails if you ride them, creating more work for hard-working volunteers who’d rather build new trails than fix your carelessness. If you want to give back, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party this Wednesday at 5:30 behind Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. You can help fix bikes (washing them and changing tires is helpful too), and you can drop off your fixable bikes for ABB to give away. You’ll get a tax writeoff for your donations. In other news, the HRATS annual fundraiser is December 14th at Double Mountain.
