Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The steady buildup of the snowpack continues today. That’ll be followed by a welcome day of sunshine on Tuesday before we slip into a period of rain from Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Warm weather Friday slowly cools through the weekend. As of this morning, precip is looking minimal, but not zero, for the Friday through Sunday period.

Monday kicks off with a period of heavy snowfall. That’s followed by slow clearing overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ this morning, will rise to 5000′ for a short period midday, and will fall back to 3500′ overnight. During the day, about 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast. Call that 5-6” of dense new snow. Just a trace is forecast tonight before the sky clears. Wind: SE 25-40 all day dropping to SW 5-10 overnight.

Tuesday starts partly cloudy and quickly clears. Clouds increase overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ all day and will rise to about 4500-5000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning, E 25 in the afternoon, SE 10-20 in the evening, and SW 5-10 after midnight.

Wednesday starts out with 8000′ of clouds and clear sky above. High clouds filter in mid-morning, and precip starts up early afternoon. That precip will initially be snow, but it’ll quickly switch to rain as temps at 850mb (5000′) rise to +4C. About 0.1” WE wet snow (an inch or so) is forecast starting around 1pm. Overnight, another 0.8” WE is forecast. That could bring an inch or two of wet snow before a switch to rain. Wind: SW 5-10 early builds to S 20-30 in the afternoon and swings to SW 30-55 overnight. Light drizzle continues Thursday morning before becoming just-cloudy in the afternoon. Relatively warm, somewhat sprinkly weather is forecast on Friday. Temps slowly cool through the weekend. Have a great Monday!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

DO NOT ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
