Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The week is starting out sunny on the mountain. We’ll see dry weather through Tuesday night followed by rain or snow on Wednesday and snow-then-sun on Thursday. Cooler, progressive weather Friday through Sunday brings additional snowfall, although the details aren’t clear at this time.

For Monday, the mountain starts off clear. A few clouds may move in this afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ early and 4000′ in the afternoon and evening. Wind will be light and variable. Tuesday starts with high clouds and becomes partly cloudy in the afternoon. The FAF will be 4000′ in the morning and 5000′ in the afternoon and evening. Wind will be light and variable. Snow conditions these two days will be hard-and-fast granular early and corn snow in the afternoon.

Wednesday starts off cloudy. The freezing level is going to be right on the edge for snow or rain all day: 5000′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. We’ll probably see an inch of snow or so before 5pm. The evening is even trickier, because the precipitation amount really depends on the exact path of the incoming moisture. My best guess at this point is .5” WV that falls mostly as rain or snain.

Thursday’s weather looks snowy, but exact amounts are impossible to predict at this point. The best I can say right now is that the weather looks cold enough to be snowy through the weekend, but we’ll have to wait until we get closer to see exactly how much snow we’re going to get.

Random Morning Thoughts

Get this – by the time I showered and made my lunch and put together some snacks for the monks, I don’t have time (or energy) to reflect. In other words, I didn’t prioritize this. I hope you have a wonderful start to the week. Enjoy the sunshine!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The wind is going to be so light Monday through Wednesday that the only folks benefiting from this forecast will be orchardists looking to spray. For Monday, expect light and variable wind early, calm wind for much of the day, and light west wind at less than 5mph after 2pm. Tuesday starts out calm. After 1pm, the wind picks up to W 7-10. Wednesday also starts out calm. The wind will pick up to W 5mph or less after 1pm. Thursday starts out with light west wind or light and variable wind. By mid morning, the wind will pick up to gusty 26-30 out of the west through the entire Gorge. River temp is currently 42 degrees.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just stepped outside to look, and the sky is clear. We’ll have a sunny day today with a few clouds possible in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks like it’ll start off with high clouds. Temps will be right around freezing early and near 60 in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts off clouds. Sprinkles move in around 8am with steadier rain in the evening. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 50’s later. Very light west wind. 42% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m guessing the dirt is fantastic right now, at least at lower elevations. However, the temps did drop well below freezing last night, meaning there will be freeze thaw above 500′ or so today. If you ride, it’s quite likely you will do significant trail damage. So, wait until late afternoon so the trails can dry out, or do a road ride today instead. It should be awesome with temps in the upper 50’s. . If you want to give back to trails, there’s a work party on 3/24 at 9:30am meeting at the bottom of Mitchell Ridge.

Upcoming Events

Coming up today, there’s meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine. There’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. This evening at 6pm, there’s community yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon. At 6:30, there’s community yoga at the Mt. Hood Town Hall and community Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell. There’s YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) in The Dalles at 6:45pm. Looking ahead to the weekend, there’s a ski mountaineering race on Saturday at Timberline, there’s a CGWA Hatchery work party, and there’s an HRATS work party on Mitchell Ridge. The Wheatfield Half Marathon is Sunday in The Dalles.
