Monday. Rainy season is coming… (so is Temira’s forecast vacation)

2016-04-19-19-15-20-c
Yesterday morning I woke up quite late (much like I did today) and neglected to write a forecast. That’s my loss, because I was on the Washington side of the river all day without my windsurfing gear. For those of you who caught a session, great! For the rest of us, let that be a lesson to never leave gear at home. Speaking of missed forecasts, let’s talk about the rest of this week. Due to a massive training in Portland, I’ll be taking Wednesday through Sunday off. I’m really hoping I’ll still remember how to forecast when I return! Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

On to the Monday forecast: we started the day with gradients of .03 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc) with the river temp at 64 degrees and flow at 79.7kcfs. Wind speeds were hovering in the single digits to the mid teens, depending on where you looked. As usual with these fall days, the forecast is a bit tricky. A frontal system will move into the region, likely bumping up the wind a bit. I think we’ll see up-and-down 12-15 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier from mid-morning on. The wind east of Mosier should be a bit stronger today, with 15-18 for much of the day with 20-23 possible east of The Dalles in the afternoon.

Tuesday starts off with west wind at 5-10. Not much more will happen on Tuesday as an upper level low off the coast works to diminish the cross-Cascade gradient. Even so, we may see some periods of 10-13 scattered throughout the day.

Wednesday currently looks quite rainy in the morning as an upper level low moves onshore. Models predict zero wind for Wednesday, but I think that might be a bit pessimistic. We’ll most likely see light east wind in the 10-15 range in the morning. As the low moves onshore mid-afternoon, the wind should pick up to W 13-16 from Viento east to Arlington. Steven’s Locks, likely to remain under the clouds, will probably be in the 8-11 range. Thursday currently looks light and variable. However, this is a very active weather system, and it’s likely that the forecast will only be reliable a couple of days out.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Click here for your 2016-2017 ski season forecast. This is a snow forecast for Mt. Hood at 5000′, but it’s worth mentioning the incoming 6000′ system. For Monday, expect the snow level around 6000′ early and 6500′ in the afternoon. Mt. Hood will receive about .1” WV (water value) tonight, for an inch of new. Tuesday sees the snow level around 6000′ all day. We’ll get .3” WV during the 24 hour period for 1-3” of new above 6000′. Wednesday looks quite wet, with the potential for significant snowfall above 6000′. We’ll see .6-.8” WV, mostly before 2pm, followed by snow flurries. That gives us 4-7” of dense new snow above 6000′. I don’t feel like doing a wind forecast yet (we’re easing into this, folks), so you just get a snow forecast today. =)

Random Morning Thoughts

You might have noticed that the forecast has been coming later and later each day. There are a couple of reasons for that. The first is that my body tends to be attuned to the daylight cycle. Sunrise wakes me, usually right after the colors have faded from the sky. The second reason for my late awakenings is much more interesting to me. My alarm clock has ceased functioning.

While you may use a sunrise alarm or your phone or some terrible noise-maker or your children to wake you each morning, I have a different device. I have an automatic feeder for my cat. In the past, the sound of food dropping would result in Strava leaping from my chest, pulling me from a deep sleep.

She no longer leaps at the sound of food. Instead, she stays curled up under my arm. She waits to eat until I’ve scratched her ears, rubbed her belly and reflected her experience back to her.

Ah, the things we do for love. My cat, preferring to receive love, delays breakfast and no longer functions as an alarm clock. We humans do much more complicated things to meet our attachment needs. We give, we take, we fight. We cling and curse and cuddle. What we fail to do so often is speak the words that underlie our actions. Rather than expressing our hopes and fears, we push people away or pull them in. Our actions are interpreted or misinterpreted through the experiential lens of our loved ones. And this can cause us to lose the very thing we want most. Love.

Vulnerability can be terrifying, both to be it and to see it. Handled with love and care, it will bring us closer. Vulnerable people are awesome. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

First off in biking news this morning is the fact that Hospital Hill and other Kreps and SDS lands have reopened. Feel free to pedal, hike and run these places now. In road biking news, Wednesday will be too rainy, but Monday and Tuesday look like light wind, partly cloudy days. If you’re hoping for tacky dirt, it should be available on Thursday. In dirt biking news, Post Canyon has reopened for moto use. However, there’s quite a bit of logging going on in upper Post, and that will affect many trails including the 160 (Baby Head Alley, etc) and 170 (Dirt Surfer). Complete list: 130, 140, 150, 152, 160, 170, and 180.
