Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Yesterday, Sunday, was one heck of a gorgeous day on the mountain. Today will be the same: sunny all day with light wind. The weather gets a touch more active for the rest of the week, but weather systems will mostly be too far offshore to give us much snow. Models then hint at warmer weather, wetter snow, and a chance of some r**n at times.

You’ll want to grab your sunglasses for Monday. Sunshine sticks around all day. Clouds move in tonight and bring just a few flurries. The free air freezing level near Mt. Hood will be 500-1000′ this morning and will fall to 0′ overnight. Environmental snow level this evening: about 2500-3000′. Just a trace of snow is forecast tonight. Wind: S 10-20 this morning, SW 5-10 through the evening, and WSW 15-20 after midnight.

Tuesday will be high overcast early and will quickly turn sunny. Add in low clouds up to 6000′. You’ll need to get up high to be in the sun. Down low: rather gloomy! Overnight, a little bit of snow is forecast. The free air freezing level near Mt. Hood will be 0′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. Environmental snow level: about 3500′. Overnight, 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast, for about an inch of new snow. Wind: WSW 15-20 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight.

Wednesday starts out clear with low clouds to 5000′. Clouds move in during the afternoon, and snow or mixed precip starts up around sunset. The quantity of snow/mixed precip, the snow level, and the strength of the wind are all up in the air as we wait to see the track this system will take. As of right now, models suggest 0.2” to 0.5” WE and a couple inches of wet snow, likely mixed with rain at some point. Wind will be southerly, which should limit impacts even if it’s strong. That system continues to impact Mt. Hood through Thursday, after which more systems, exact paths uncertain, will contribute to the weather. Get up there and enjoy it today – it’s going to be an awesome day to be on the groom!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

An outdoor related event coming up: Gorge Ultimate starts its Winter League January 8th on Sundays from 5-7 at the Hood River High School Lighted Turf, but will be in a gym if snow is on the turf. Sign up to be on a team by Dec 31st, or be a sub: https://gorge.ultimatecentral.com/e/winter-league-2023

Cycling

DO NOT ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
