Gorge Wind Forecast
Light westerlies Monday morning quickly give way to a widespread east wind event that lasts for the next three days. More important than the wind is the critical, extreme fire danger. No campfires. No shooting. No mowing the lawn, chainsawing, or doing anything else that could cause a spark (love is still okay, even if it causes sparks). Please do your part and tell others to stop doing things that could cause a fire. Please be receptive if someone talks to you! I know that some of you are visiting the Gorge and camping. You’ll be tempted to start a campfire. DON’T. This is a once-in-a-century wind/low humidity event. The fire danger has not been higher in your lifetime. Enough said.
Monday morning starts out with fishin’ weather as evidence by about 60 boats at the mouth of the White Salmon river. While gradients early support westerlies at 10-15 from Viento to Hood River, that will stop soon. We’ll see easterlies fill in from the east to the west. By 2pm, we should have gusty 25-35 everywhere east of Hood River. By 5pm, that wind fills in at 25-35 all the way to Rooster Rock. Up in the mountains: easterlies at 45+mph. High temp: 85.
Tuesday starts with easterlies at 50-65 near Rooster Rock, 40ish near Stevenson, 30ish near Viento, and 10-20 everywhere else. The wind may drop to 40ish at Rooster in the afternoon, but easterlies will pick up to 15-20 from Hood River eastward. Mountains: 40-70. Stay out of the mountains. Don’t light a campfire. Don’t be a dum-dum. High temp: 76.
Wednesday sees the easterlies continue, but strength slowly wanes. Rooster starts the day at 40mph or so, Stevenson 30, and Viento 20-25. The wind drops to 25-30 at Rooster in the afternoon and drops to 20-25 from Stevenson to Viento. East of Viento, you’ll find light easterlies in the morning and 10-15 in the afternoon. High temp: 85.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

9/5: Hood River County lands are now closed between 9pm and 5am due to extreme fire danger and the likelihood of nighttime users starting a fire. Lands are still open during the day. Moto use is limited to developed roads. Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood are closed due to fire danger. Respect the closures. Other Post news: Eldorado has reopened, as have other trails associated with that particular timber harvest closure.
