Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood picked up over a foot of fluffy powder in the last 24 hours, and you’re probably up there shredding it right now. Not me. I’m sick, and I slept for a looooong time last night. If you, like me, are missing it, don’t worry. You should have another chance at some powder turns on Tuesday. Heck, the weather will stay cool enough for powder for at least the next seven to ten days.

Monday adds just a touch of snow during the day, but the snowfall rate will pick up overnight. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and back down to 1000′ or less overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for just an inch of new snow. Overnight, 0.5” to 0.8” is forecast. Call that 5-9” fluffy powder. Wind: S 10-20 all day becoming W 40 after midnight.

Tuesday will be storm skiing in the morning with a shot at some sunshine in the afternoon. The snow level will be 0-1000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast during the day for 3-5” powder. Overnight: clear sky. Wind will be W 40 early, W 30 mid-morning, W 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 10-20 after midnight.

Sunshine holds for much of the day Wednesday before high clouds move in. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and back down below 1000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NW 10-20 in the morning, NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and W 35 after midnight.

Several inches of snow are forecast on Thursday along with strong westerlies. Snow Friday morning gives way to sunshine in the afternoon. Snowfall increases Saturday afternoon and continues into Sunday. For this entire period, the snow level will hover around 1500′ or less. Very nice. Enjoy!

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
