The Forecast

CoronaChat

Hello, everyone! I’d like to introduce you to … CoronaChat. It’s a new segment that will help you and your friends understand why we’re in deep shit and what we can do about it! See, our government made a big boo-boo and didn’t get us to take stops to stop the spread of this virus early enough. Since they failed (SAD!), we get to jump in with our American Individualism and bootstrap sensibility.

The easiest way to convey what needs to happen is to say “Stay the F home”. But that’s not clear enough, right? You can’t really Stay the F home, and that idea is too black-and-white. Stay home unless you absolutely have to do some shopping. If you do go out, wear a cotton mask or bandana so you don’t spread your possibly asymptomatic germy-germs all over everyone else. If you need exercise, do it straight from your front door, don’t go with anyone from outside your household, and don’t chitter-chatter within 6+ feet of anyone else.

Why? This virus spreads even if you don’t have symptoms. It’s like herpes, only worse, because it can kill you. You don’t want herpes, right? Well, you don’t want this either. Social distancing is like wearing a condom – it protects you from what you don’t know is there. Violating social distancing recommendations is like having unprotected sex with everyone around you. That handshake: sex. Standing within 6 feet of someone: sex. Riding in a car with a friend: sex. Riding in a car with your mountain biking or kiting buddy: sex. Now, I know you’re not THAT promiscuous with your body, so don’t be that promiscuous with your immune system.

Start being vigilant about your social distancing practices right now, or you’re going to catch something much, much, much worse than herpes.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Sunshine was the mountain meme for the last week. This week’s pattern will shift cooler and snowier for at least a few days. I want to be clear that I am not encouraging you and your friends to pile in a car and head up to hike. I’m just keeping the weather forecast going because that’s what I do, and also because doing this component helps me write a better forecast for Gorge locals and especially orchardists.

For Monday, expect a cloudy morning with flurries, a clear afternoon, and light snow overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ all day, falling to 1500′ overnight. About 0.2” water value (WV) falls during the day. Another 0.2” WV falls overnight. That gives us 2” and 2” for a total of 5” (kidding! 2+2 still equals 4). Wind: W 30 early, SW 25-35 in the afternoon, and SW 20-30 after midnight.

Tuesday looks cloudy and snowy in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon, and snowy overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. About 0.3” WV falls during the day, for 2-3” of new. Another 0.4-0.5” WV falls overnight, for 4-6” of snow. Wind will be SW 20-30 early, 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight.

Wednesday brings a few snow flurries followed by clear sky. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, with a freezing level of 1000′ overnight under clear sky. Just a trace of snow falls. Wind will be NW 10-15 early, NW 5-10 in the afternoon, and NW 15=20 overnight. Thursday looks sunny, and it appears we may have another round of light to moderate snow on Friday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue… For Monday, we’ll have 12-15 in the west all day. Wind east of Mosier will be gusty 20-24 in the morning with a period of gusty 24-27 from Avery to Arlington this afternoon. If you’re going out there, DO NOT carpool with anyone outside your household. River flow is 105kcfs and temp is 43 degrees. Tuesday starts with west wind at 7-10 everywhere. Afternoon wind: 7-10 in the west and 13-16 east of Mosier. Wednesday starts with 14-17 through the entire Gorge. Afternoon wind picks up to 22-25 form Stevenson to Biggs.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

Let’s be very clear about what social distancing means in terms of cycling. It means driving to the trailhead with just you or housemates in the car. It means keeping at least six feet of distance between you and any other riders. Social distancing is not these things: 1) parking at a crowded trailhead where you cannot maintain a six foot distances from others. 2) piling a bunch of friends into a car and shuttling Post Canyon or any other trail. 3) having a social chat as you ride doubletrack side-by-side. Getting outside and getting exercise is important for mental health. But you have to do it in a safe that will help us flatten the curve of this virus.
