Monday: cloudy today, hot this week!

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when the mountains and beaches are closed? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider subscribing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to subscribe? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $12.34 or more gets you a subscription. Click below to subscribe. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50mph to access recreation, and all land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. Recreate and go home. That’ll help limit the spread of Novel Coronavirus. If you live in a place that’s still under a stay at home order, stay home – follow the guidance of where you live, not where you want to go.

Not much happens in terms of wind on Monday as a weak front moves through the area perhaps bringing some light drizzle. Morning gradients of .06 and .02 say something might happen, tho! We’ll start the day with 10-13 everywhere. For a short period late morning, the wind could pick up to gusty 18-23 from The Dalles to Avery. After that, expect gusty 14-17 through the whole Gorge. Before I forget – the Army Corps announced a while back that Roosevelt Park was open. That’s actually not true. Only the boat ramp is open. The park is not open to windsurfing and kiting after all. Nor is the park open to overnight camping. Apparently quite a few people violated the camping portion of this closure last week. Peeps, please don’t do that. Not only are you breaking the law, you’re putting access at risk for everyone!

On to Tuesday… High pressure builds over the Northwest, giving the models difficulty in predicting. The day starts with light westerlies. Afternoon wind builds to 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River with 20-23 from Moiser to Avery. Models struggle even more on Wednesday. Currently they predict light west wind switching to light east wind. A more likely outcome is light westerlies building to perhaps 12-15 in the afternoon, solely driven by synoptic-scale pressure differences. Looking long-range for “the big day”, models predict increasing westerlies for Friday and Saturday.

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast: this portion is waiting for those counties to be ready for visitors. Coast hotels reopen on 5/26, so perhaps that’s when. However, non-essential travel is still restricted.
