Gorge Wind Forecast

Weekend wind definitely fell into the “gusty and hard to predict” category, as predicted in the forecasts. The next couple of days also have forecasting difficulties. In general, that’s a hazard of this job, but it’s also complicated by overly active weather for this time of year; the wind models struggle with accuracy and precision and timing with a strong jet stream and incoming low pressure systems. That said, we have a few days of westerlies in the forecast.

For Monday, an upper level low approaches the coast. We’d much prefer high pressure offshore, and I’m going to downgrade the GFS prediction based on this. The day starts with 15-18 in the west, not much between Swell and The Dalles (to be expected with this winter-like general picture) and 10-14 out east. As that low approaches this afternoon, eastern Gorge wind increases ahead of an associated front. Rain starting early afternoon drops the western Gorge wind to 7-10. You’ll want to head east of The Dalles from 11am to 5pm for gusty 23-27. Models suggest the wind will die late afternoon as a band of rain sweeps through. Trust them. River flow is 323kcfs and temp is 54 degrees.

That low moves into southern Oregon on Tuesday. Result: increasing marine air as the day goes on and wraparound rain from the north between noon and 5pm. Not a good sign for wind! Morning westerlies at 10-13 (Stevenson to Doug’s) and 13-16 (Avery to Arlington) balance out at gusty 12-17 everywhere in the afternoon with drizzle.

A broad high pressure well offshore combines with a trough of low pressure along the coast and a lingering inland low on Wednesday for morning westerlies. The day starts with 10-13 from Stevenson to Viento and 22-26 from Mosier to Avery. Models like the idea of the wind dropping off (maybe even switching to E, at least east of The Dalles) in the afternoon. This really depends on the location of offshore high pressure, so let’s wait before making plans. Looking out to Friday, the Euro and GFS agree on a stronger westerly day to end the workweek.

Road and Mountain Biking

Logging will begin on the Whoopdee main loop downhill today. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the bottom. A report from Post yesterday afternoon said it was “slick”. Maybe it’ll dry out enough to ride before the next round of rain hits?
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
