Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

Expect a clear and sunny day on Mt. Hood today, for real this time, not like the high clouds from yesterday. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ with high temps at 4000′ in the low 40’s. Wind today will be SE 15 during the day and S 15 in the evening.

Tuesday also looks clear, sunny and warm on the mountain. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′, and high temps at 5000′ will be in the mid 40’s. Clouds move in late Tuesday night. The wind on Tuesday will be S 10 in the morning, SW 15 in the afternoon, and SW 25 overnight.

Wednesday starts off cloudy but quickly turns rainy. The snow level will be 10,000′ all day long, dropping to 8000′ after midnight. Models are holding the heaviest rain to the north and south of Mt. Hood, but it seems likely the mountain will receive more rain than the models are predicting. As of right now, the GFS is only predicting 1/2” rain between 4am Wednesday and 4am Thursday, but I suspect we’ll see more. Wind on Wednesday will be SW 25 for much of the day, building to SW 40 after midnight.

Thursday starts off with rain and then switches to snow, becoming partly or mostly cloudy in the afternoon. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 6500′ by 7am, and 2000′ after 10am. About 1/4” of rain will fall before the switch to snow. Then .2-.3” WV will fall as snow, for 2-3” of new snow, with just-flurries after 4pm. Wind on Thursday will be SW 40 early, turning to WSW 50 around 10 and slowly fading to WSW 35 in the evening. The next weather system looks to be on Saturday, but the outcome really depends on the eventual track of the storm.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Expect east wind at 40-45 near Iwash (Rooster) Rock all day with E 30-35 near Stevenson. Tuesday brings E 40-45 in the morning and E 35-40 in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like E 35-40 early, E 40-45 in the afternoon, and light east wind after midnight.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was sitting at my desk this morning watching the sky grow lighter, and I felt a little disoriented by the process. After a while it occurred to me that my confusion was related to the fact that I haven’t seen a clear-sky sunrise in I-don’t-know-how-long! For me, there’s something very relaxing about the slow brightening of the sky into an eventual blaze of sun.

For me, a clear morning is intertwined with a sense of happiness and peacefulness. (huge eagle just soared past my window, btw) The weather, of course is out of my control – I can’t make mornings like this happen all the time, but I can soak them up when they do happen.

When we notice these peaceful moments in our busy lives, it’s important to take a moment to slow down and absorb what we’re feeling. If we turn our full attention on our sense of calm contentment without judgment, we encourage it to grow. That comes out of both common sense and neuroscience – work the networks you like, and allow the unhelpful networks to languish.

It’s a beautiful day. Stop your busy rush for a few moments and soak up the goodness. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a gorgeous clear morning here in the Gorge, with the moon and the stars shining brightly. Expect a sunny day with temps in the upper 20’s early and the upper 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks just like today. Wednesday is tricky – temps are going to be borderline freezing in the morning. With rain arriving around 6am, it’s likely we could see a shot of freezing rain during the day, all the way from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. East wind all day Wednesday increases the likelihood of this, but it’s going to be close.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. Sounds like Dirty Fingers has given up – they’re taking the shop ride to Portland on Sunday this week so they can actually ride bikes.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s a walking happiness group that leaves One Community Health in The Dalles at 5pm, there’s Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, free yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and at the Parkdale Community Center, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.

Have an awesome day today!
