Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! The most exciting weather feature in a while, a cold front, will impact the region today. This keeps the west side cool and allows thermal gradients to build across the Gorge. Today’s the strongest day of the next four, but westerlies will linger through the week. If you’re heading out east to chase the wind today, avoid Roosevelt. The Newell Road fire has much of the surrounding areas under Level 3 or Level 2 evacuation orders.

So, we start off Monday with pressures of 30.03/29.93/29.88 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.05. Westerlies are in the 20-23 range from Viento to the Hatch to start the day with 7-10 east to Doug’s and 11-14 at Stevenson and the eastern Gorge. We’ll see a couple hours of 20-23 from Viento to Hood River, perhaps to Mosier, this morning before this weather system stumbles in and nudges the wind eastward. For the afternoon, expect 26-30 from Lyle to Threemile with 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier. River flow yesterday was 101-143kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 78F.

Tuesday starts with a deep marine push. Cool air extending far into the desert keeps the thermal gradient at bay, but offshore pressure builds in the afternoon and lends a hand. The day starts with 7-10 all through the Gorge, all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Midday wind holds at 7-10 under the clouds in the west and rises to 15-18 from Mosier to Arlington. The clouds finally burn back in the afternoon. This allows the stretch from Hood river to Avery to rise to 17-20. Rufus holds at 15-18. High temp: 79F.

Wednesday starts out calm or nearly so. A low approaches the coast and beats down the synoptic-scale gradients. We’ll just be relying on thermals. They’ll be enough for 16-19 in the afternoon from Hood River to Doug’s with 12-15 from Stevenson to the Hatchery. High temp: 81F. There’s quite a bit of range in the models for Thursday, but models are hinting at mid 20’s, probably east of Mosier. Let’s leave it there for now – I was out all night on a call and want to try for some sleep. Have a great day on the river!

This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
