Gorge Wind Forecast

The weather’s a’changing, and that means the nature of the wind will change too. If you enjoyed the unpredictable and gusty nature of yesterday’s wind, you’ll enjoy the wind over the next week. Offshore low pressure dominates the picture for much of the next seven days. For the most part, wind will be driven by incoming weather systems, meaning it’ll be gusty, unreliable, and may require pre-emptive driving. That said, we’ll have wind of some sort on most days.

For Monday, we’ll have warm weather in the desert and cooler weather in the metro area. Westerlies keep going as a result, but a slowly approaching low trough keeps them from realizing their true potential. Early gradients are 0.11 and 0.06 started the day. River flow is 245kcfs and temp is 55 degrees. Expect morning wind at 18-22 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 in other locations. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 10-13 east of there. That wind should hold through the rest of the day.

Timing of an incoming frontal system is no longer conducive to a giant day on the river. SAD! Rain arrives in the western Gorge shortly after dawn, shutting down the wind there and adding some much-needed moisture to the land. On the river, the wind starts at 13-16 everywhere. It quickly drops to 5-10 west of The Dalles. Eastern Gorge westerlies pick up to gusty 25-29 for a few hours between noon and 5pm or so. Drive pre-emptively, and expect Avery, Celilo, and Roosevelt to be your best bets.

Offshore low pressure Wednesday takes the wind from light westerly early to east 10-15. Thursday’s forecast has been all over the place. It currently sits at west 10-13. For now, we’re not expecting much for the weekend as a giant area of low pressure sits off the coast.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Jones Monday: 19-22. Tuesday: 5-8. Wednesday: nope. Sauvie’s Monday-Wednesday: nope, except for 7-10 late Monday. Coast (north/central/south). Definitely some good surf coming if you like small south swell. Monday: SW5/SW10/S10, NW swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Tuesday: W5/W5/S15, SW 3′ @ 17. Wednesday: 15-20/W5/S10, W 6′ @ 10 and SW 3′ @ 17.

Road and Mountain Biking

First, this week is National Bike to Work Week! Next, there’s a confirmed report, with photos, of Falls Creek being open. Go get it! Post feels like July – very dusty, but maybe it will recover this week from the rain? Remember that there is a race in Post on Saturday the 18th. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. There is a parking area 0.5 miles farther down the road. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
