Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Roller-coaster weather is in the forecast for the next few days. Meadows threw in the towel for Monday based on the wind forecast, but the wind also looks problematic on Tuesday. Teacup groomed this morning, but they’re encouraging people to stay away due to the wind. Timberline plans to open, but they are reporting freezing rain. So… let’s dig in and see what the rest of the week holds.

Monday sees pockets of warm air that bounce the freezing level around during the day. That’s generally a recipe for mixed precip, and indeed, we have freezing mist. A cold front tonight drives the snow level down to 1500′ or less by Tuesday morning. We’ll see just a trace of freezing rain today, perhaps up to a tenth of an inch as strong wind forces the moisture to fall. Overnight, the snow level falls from 4500′ as the next system hit down to 1500′. In that time period, models call for 0.4” water equivalent (WE) of precipitation. Let’s increase that thanks to orographics and predict 4-6” of wind-affected, increasingly fluffy snow. Wind: NW 40-50 this morning, W 50 this afternoon, W 60 tonight, and W 40-50 on Tuesday morning.

Heavy snow and strong wind is forecast on Tuesday, and with the wind direction shifting to NW mid-morning, lifts are likely to be affected, especially at Meadows. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. About 0.8” WE is forecast during the day. Orographic assistance gives us a forecast of 9-14” of dry, light, fluffy pow-pow with free refills on every run. Overnight, just another 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast for an inch or two of additional snowfall. Fingers crossed for lifts! Wind: W 45-50 early, NW 45-55 mid-morning, NW 30-50 in the afternoon, and variable to 10 overnight.

The groom on Wednesday will be soft but epic, and the powder should be stellar. Plan for a very icy drive to the mountain. The freezing level will be 0′ all day with temps in the teens in the morning and single digits in the afternoon. Just a trace of snow is forecast to fall, but the flurries will continue all day. In the afternoon, the wind turns easterly and drops some easterly orographic snowfall, but again, just a trace to an inch. Wind: variable to 10 in the morning, E 15 in the afternoon, and E 20 overnight.

Very, very cold temps (near 0) are forecast on Thursday. Mid-level morning clouds give way to clear sky in the afternoon. Temps remain frigid all day. Wind: E 20ish all day long. Next system: late next weekend or early next week.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Fun stuff in the Gorge wind forecast for the next few days. Strong offshore high pressure, a strong cold front, and then an arctic air mass all combine for rather exciting conditions. Monday starts with pressures of 30.32/30.22/30.08 for gradients of .10/.14. With drizzle present in the west (and the radar down), we have gusty westerlies at 10-30 depending on location. Viento, of course, is ripping. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Swell (maybe Mosier) with 15-20 from Lyle to Doug’s and gusty 30-35 east of The Dalles. River flow is 118kcfs, river temp is 39F, and high temp forecast is 49F for Hood River and 53F for Arlington. 53+39=92. Sorry. Not 100 yet.

Tuesday keeps at it. The day starts with widespread 25-29 from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon wind drops to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s and picks up to 28-33 east of The Dalles. Move quickly, because it will drop off mid to late afternoon. High temp: 43F. Wednesday starts sub-freezing with calm wind in the west and light easterlies east of Mosier. The wind picks up to E 20-25 all through the Gorge. Even stronger widespread easterlies are forecast for Thursday with very cold temps.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

If you ride in the mud, you’ll do significant and permanent damage to the trail bed. Be thoughtful about your riding choices. Also, it’s winter. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
