Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re feeling sore from this long stretch of wind we’re having, take a deep breath and do some stretching. Westerlies continue at least through Friday and quite possibly longer. If you’re into stronger wind, save some energy for Wednesday and Thursday – they’re both looking big and bad and bold and nuking!

Stable weather continues on Monday with the added bonus of a weak trough swinging through in the afternoon. That severs to increase gradients later in the day. Add that to our solid start – 0.12 (pdx-dls) and 0.02 (dls-psc) – for another solid day on the river. Morning westerlies start at 17-20 from Swell to Hood river with 22-26 near Viento and Mosier. East and west of there, Dawn Patrol is up-and-down in the 12-18 range. Steadier wind arrives late morning. You’ll find 23-26 from Viento to Moiser with 18-23 at Stevenson and 12-15 from Lyle to Avery. Wait before you head out east, as the wind will be light in the morning. Models suggest that inland-moving trough will aid your cause late this afternoon: westerlies bump up to 22-25 at Stevenson, 25-28 from Viento to Rufus, and 10-13 east of there. River flow is 110kcfs. River temp is 70F. High temp Hood River: 87F.

A brief and weak ridge of high pressure transits the PNW on Tuesday. Westerlies dip a little bit. Dawn Patrol starts with 22-26 from Viento to Mosier with 12-15 everywhere else. Expect a dip to 19-23 late morning, when the wind will have filled in from Stevenson to Avery (10-13 east of there). Models like the idea of an evening recovery; the current forecast is 23-26 from Stevenson to Celilo early evening with 10-13 to the east. High temp Hood River: 90F. The Dalles: 96F.

Deeper and more persistent marine clouds march into Portland on Wednesday. High temps in the Gorge drop about 7-10F. Dawn Patrol will be 25-28 at Viento, Mosier, and the Rowena section of River. It’s even possible we’ll see early wind at The Wall. Near Hood River and Stevenson, marine clouds will lead to very gusty early-morning wind. Wait until noon or so for the best, strongest results; 28-33 is the call from Viento to Celilo with Stevenson still waiting for sunshine at 18-23. Afternoon: 28-33 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 30-35 from Rowena to Arlington. Threemile: 22-26. High temp: 83F.

Thursday looks equally windy as does Friday. Westerlies back off into the low-mid 20’s for the weekend. Whew. That’s a stretch of wind. Have a great week!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
