Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! As you can tell by the thunderstorms this morning and lingering high clouds, it’s One of Those Days where the forecast is tricky. Weather systems moving around the PNW over the next few days keep some uncertainty in the wind forecast. That said, we should have wind through at least Saturday. I still have some stuff I”m selling: 7’7” x 121L Armstrong downwind SUP board used less than 6 times. $1900. Takuma TK Carbon board, 110L. Well loved, no repairs. $700 (but I gotta find my new board first!) Takuma Profoil 1900 with mast and fuselage and bolts and such: $550 (has some scratches, but works great). 853 steel Lemond Road Bike 53cm, $250obo. Email me at twomirrors at g-mail if interested.

On to your forecast… Pressures this morning (it’s Monday) were 30.14/30.04/30.03 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.01. Wind speeds are all over the place, so give it a little time to settle in. We should find 20-23 from Viento to Mosier by late morning with building wind at Stevenson and 13-16ish to the east of Mosier. Early afternoon wind rises to 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. We’ll probably see a dip on the west side this afternoon, maybe to 15-18. Rufus joins at 20-23, and Arlington rises to 17-20. That said, I just realized that there’s a decent marine push to the west this morning in addition to the high clouds. That could result in the western Gorge hanging on to 22-25 longer than models predict. River flow yesterday was 101-151kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is 82F.

A rather more stable setup on Tuesday combines with a weak ridge inland for (probably) steadier but slightly lesser wind. Dawn Patrol looks like 17-20 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 at Stevenson and to the east of Hood River. The wind builds to 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles and holds. Rufus: 14-17 in the afternoon. East of there: not much. High temp on Tuesday will be in the mid 80’s.

A weak weather system approaches on Wednesday morning and falls apart as it nears us. It should pull some marine clouds in to the metro area, and that should help our cause. Our cause, of course, is wind! The day starts with 13-16 from Stevenson to Arlington with 20-25 at Viento. You might even see some sprinkles from Viento westward! Midday westerlies rise to 20-24 from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon: 22-25 from Viento to Rufus with 17-20 to the west of Viento and also east of Rufus to Arlington. High temp: 79F.

Looking at the extended forecast…. Lots of range in the forecast on Thursday. Models have anything from upper teens to mid 20’s. Ditto Friday. Warmer, sunnier, Corridor-friendly weather is forecast on Saturday with westerlies in the upper teens to low 20’s. Sunday is a big maybe at this point. After that, the weather looks hot (probably) for a bit, but models are really all over the place. Have a great time on the river today!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
