Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy start to the day on Mt. Hood, and it’ll add just a bit of precip. That’s currently the forecast – light precip on and off for the first half of the week followed by dry weather for the middle part and a return to precipitation through the weekend. Remember that Meadows is closed Monday through Thursday this week. Timberline is open for your shredding please. Teacup is only grooming weekends, but they seem to keep adding random grooming here and there. Check the website.

Snow conditions today will likely be squishy spring snow thanks to above-freezing temps and overnight clouds. But I’m not there, so no promises. Clouds stick around all day with a trace of rain or snow forecast (temps are running a bit warmer than models). Temps drop overnight, and up to 1” new snow is forecast. The snow level will be 6000′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. Wind: SW 10-20 early, SW 15-25 this afternoon, and WSW 15-20 overnight.

Tuesday looks clear above 6000′ in the morning with increasing clouds during the day, snow in the afternoon, and clouds overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight. Up to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for up to 2” new snow. Another 0.3” WE is forecast overnight, for up to 3” more. Chances are we’ll get less snow than forecast. Wind will be WSW 15-20 in the morning, WSW 20-25 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight.

Wednesday starts high overcast and turns mostly clear by afternoon. High clouds return overnight. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Wind: W 15 in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight. Thursday looks dry, and so does Friday morning. A wetter system arrives Friday night, probably, but models don’t yet agree on temps with this system. So, we’ll wait and see. Have a great week!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Active weather continues and keeps the wind gusty. That said, we’ll get a bit of assistance from California-based high pressure over the next couple of days. Monday starts nearly calm with a minimal westerly gradient. As a front moves in this afternoon, the wind picks up. You’ll find max wind at gusty 17-20 between Lyle and Rufus with 7-10 to the east and west of that stretch. The wind continues to build late afternoon. Gusty 22-26 is possible between Lyle and Arlington from mid-afternoon on. The western Gorge stays in the 7-10 range. River flow is 156kcfs, river temp is 48F, and high temp forecast is 62F. Tuesday starts with 5-10 in the western Gorge and 14-17 from The Dalles to Boardman. Lyle-Doug’s could be in that stronger zone too. As rain pushes in to the western Gorge, we’ll see gusty 22-26 from Lyle to Boardman with 10-13 under the clouds in the rainy areas. Mosier could overperform and make it in to the teen. High temp: 56F. One more caveat: atmospheric instability could make the wind even gustier than usual. Wednesday starts calm or light westerly. Afternoon: just 9-12mph out of the west between Mosier and Arlington with even less wind west of Mosier.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clouds stick around all day, and sprinkles or mist are not out of the question. Temps will be near 50 early and in the low 60’s later. Calm wind early. Light to moderate westerlies later. 2% chance of rainbows. Tuesday will be cloudy in the morning with rain in the afternoon and early evening. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Light westerlies. 88% chance of rainbows. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy then partly cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 50’s later. Calm wind early. Light westerlies in the afternoon. No rainbows.

Cycling

Whoopdee has muddy areas that are too wet to ride. Syncline doubletrack is a stream, and it’s best if you don’t ride on it. Go up Maui instead. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations. Post: snow on the upper part of Eldorado. Much of Post is still too wet/snowy to ride. Do not ride in muddy areas or you will do major and sometimes permanent trail damage. If you do, you’ll force people to repair your mess rather than building new trails. Not cool! Ride gravel roads instead. Columbia Hills is rideable with lots of wildflowers.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Big Winds and Oregon E-Bikes are having their 35th/5th anniversary sales Friday through Sunday. This is in-person purchases only, and there will be music, food, and other fun stuff happening in the parking lot. This weekend is the Cherry Festival in The Dalles (Friday-Saturday), and there’s a gravity-sport downhill race all three days at the Maryhill Loops Road.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happens at 9am – this week is the last one. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.
