Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! It was a brutal day at work yesterday, and I got a late start on the forecast, but here it is. It’s windy! Yay! Get it today, because it’s gone for the weekend. It’ll be back on Monday and Tuesday for a two-day stretch of river-play goodness. Mark your calendars for the official Hood River fundraiser for Maui Fire Relief. There will be all sorts of fun on-water activities and a great raffle. Hope to see you there! https://www.facebook.com/events/811547587096141

Friday kicks off with pressures of 29.932/29.75/29.66 for gradients of 0.18 (whoa!) and 0.09. Normally I’d just tell you to go to Rufus. You can totally do that, but the wind will fade a bit in the afternoon. Get the nukaage while you can. Morning westerlies will rise to 28-32 from Viento to Arlington with Stevenson not too far behind. As high pressure starts to return to the east side, the wind will drop in the afternoon. We’ll have 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington this afternoon. River flow yesterday was 109-201kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 76F for Hood River and 86F for Arlington.

Saturday starts off with light westerlies, maybe 10mph, near Stevenson. That stops before you notice it’s happening. The wind switches to E 15 from Stevenson to Viento and holds for a couple hours before dropping below 10mph in the afternoon. Near Hood River and to the east: basically nothin’. High temp: 86F. Sunday starts light and variable, turns to E 15 near Stevenson, and turns again to W 10-13 near Stevenson in the evening. High temp: 89F.

Hopefully the weekend allowed you to rest your watersports muscles. Monday looks like 24-27, and Tuesday looks like 27-31,, although there’s quite a bit of uncertainty about it actually being that windy on Tuesday. So, let’s call it mid-20’s Tuesday instead and see what happens. Enough to get you on the water, almost certainly. Have a great day today!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
