Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! It’s Columbia Gorge Paddle Challenge weekend, and hopefully the competitors enjoy paddling in a breeze, because that’s the Gorge’s plan for them and all of us: wind every day through at least Monday. We’ll stick with moderate to moderately strong westerlies (whatever that means!) for the next few days. Strongest: today and Monday.

Friday’s opening play is this: pressures of 30.14/30.02/29.98 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.04. Despite the minimal east-Gorge morning gradient, we should see wind out there later as intense heat in Idaho attempts to draw cooler, high-pressure air from the west side. If you were in an intensely hot place, you’d do the same! Early wind will be 20-23 from Viento to Hood River with teens elsewhere. Mid morning brings 20-24 at Stevenson, 25-28 from Viento to Mosier, and 13-16 east to Rufus. The stretch from Stevenson to Doug’s slips to 23-26 early afternoon with 17-20 at Rufus. Models suggest that the Rufus area will rise to 23-26 this evening with 20-23 at Arlington. Considering heading out there? Temps will max out in the low 80’s near Hood River and the mid 90’s near Rufus. But hey, there’s Amayah’s Indian food cart at Biggs which makes the drive and the intense heat worth it!

Slightly less offshore support and slightly less marine air on Saturday leads to a slightly less windy day. But don’t worry – it’ll still be windy! Westerlies start at 15-18 from Viento to Hood River with 10-13 at Stevenson and east of Hood River to Arlington. Mid-morning wind rises to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 17-20 from Lyle to Rowena. The wind then does an eastward shift; between Stevenson and Hood River, it falls to 14-17. From Mosier to Rufus, it rises to 23-26, with Rufus joining later than the Rowena stretch of river. High temp: 84F.

Sunday brings a slow and gentle build to the low-mid 20’s. Early wind will be 14-17 from Viento to Hood River with 5-10 near Stevenson and light westerlies to the east. Models like the idea of calm conditions east of Mosier midday with 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon: we repeat Saturday’s eastward shift. 14-17 for the west side from Stevenson to Hood River. 21-24 from Mosier to Avery. Light wind east of there. High temp: 83F.

An offshore low approaches from the north on Monday, but it takes its sweet time arriving. That’s good, because instead of dropping pressures and gradients a ton, it just sends a giant marine push and cooler air. This combines with heat, as per usual, in the desert, for wind in the mid to upper 20’s. That low moves closer offshore on Tuesday, pushes in lots of clouds, and strips the gradients away. We’ll still see teens, but probably only on the east side. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a great day on the river. Good luck to all the competitors!

He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
