Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning! It’s another powder / packed powder day on the slopes of Mt. Hood. And before I jump in… it sure is hard to shift from doing the forecast in the morning to doing it in the evening to better serve you snow-shredders. Old habits die hard, I guess! Forecast-wise, we’re looking at more of the same all the way through next week. Cold conditions combine with light snowfall. There’s some hint of something different at the end of next week, and there’s a hint of generally slightly warmer temps after next weekend, but the details are far from clear and nothing is certain.

Let’s look at Friday. Dry powder (5” in the last 24) and stellar packed powder conditions. Nordic will be soft. Get bigger baskets on your poles if possible for better push. Over on the alpine side of things, we’ll have stellar groom combined with light snowfall this morning that tapers off into the afternoon and evening and leaves us with partly cloudy conditions overnight. The snow level will be 500-1000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and back down to 0-1000′ overnight. Just an inch of new snow is forecast today. Wind: W 30 early fades to SW 15-25 this afternoon and SW 5-10 after midnight.

Dry, partly cloudy weather early Saturday gives way to snow from 10am on through the afternoon. The sky clears overnight. The snow level will be 0-1000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and back down to a free air freezing level of 0′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. Call that 2-3” of pow-pow. Up to 0.1” WE is forecast in the afternoon for up to another inch of snow. Wind: SW 5-10 early builds to SW 10-20 in the afternoon and fades to S 5-10 overnight. Call it “light”.

Sunday probably starts with high clouds, but sunbreaks are possible from mid-morning on. There’s a wee chance of some light snow overnight. The free air freezing level will be 0′-1000′ during the day with the snow level falling to 0-500′ overnight. No precip during the day. Just perfect packed powder groom. Overnight, up to 1” of new snow is possible, but that’s probably overly optimistic. Heck, if it doesn’t snow, conditions will still be perfect on Monday! Anyway, Sunday’s wind: variable to 10mph.

Monday looks dry and cold. A few inches of snow are possible Tuesday. Intermittent flurries are possible through Thursday morning. Models then hint – but don’t promise – at a shift to heavier precipitation which may or may not stay as snow; there’s quite the range of both 850mb (5000′) temps and precipitation quantity. So, we’ll just enjoy this upcoming week and see what happens!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Coming up March 4th, it’s the 4x4x24 challenge to raise funds for the Vancity soccer program. You can participate by running 4 miles every 4 hours, participate just a little, or donate. Check out more information here.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
