Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning everyone. It’s Friday. Yippee! I woke up too late to do a forecast yesterday. Mother Nature jumped in with an unexpected round of westerlies. Hopefully you caught it. We’ll see some variety of light westerlies, probably less than 10mph most of the time, for the next couple of days. Slightly stronger west wind is forecast along with showers on Sunday. Mark your calendar for Monday. Almost all members of the ensembles have us at 20+ mph as moderately strong offshore high pressure combines with inland warmth for a just-right setup.

Expect not-much on Friday despite a bit of west gradient to start: 20.02/29.97/29.92 for 0.05 and 0.00. As I was writing this, Viento was in the teens. Viento will be your best bet this morning and possibly Swell, but just for a couple hours. Call it 13-16. By late morning or early afternoon, the wind fades to 5-10 and keeps fading into the evening. River flow yesterday was 64-107kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 74F.

Saturday starts calm, turns light easterly for a few hours, and then picks up to W 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River after 2pm. High temp: 71F. Sunday’s models have various ideas of how many sprinkles or drizzles we’ll see, but they do think the rain will be heaviest east of Rowena. What wind we’ll have will be gusty and focused on the corridor. Expect 11-14 form Stevenson to Arlington to start. The wind dies off east of The Dalles and climbs to 14-17 from Stevenson to Doug’s. We could see it pick up to 17-20 in the evening as a weather system clears the area and offshore high pressure takes hold. High temp: 63F.

On Monday, ensembles are in good agreement on a windier day. They’re not sure how strong, and they’re not sure exactly where, but they do look promising. As of right now, the operational GFS starts us with 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. IN the afternoon, it calls for 25-28 from Mosier to Arlington, perhaps more. My schedule is clear. How about yours? After that, there’s significant model disagreement on the details of the weather. There is, unfortunately, good ensemble agreement on a lack of wind. Make the most of the next few days. I’ll see you out there!

Lots of brown pow out there. Go get some for yourself! There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
