Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Yesterday’s forecast didn’t have a whole heck of a lot of snow, but the news looks better in the latest round of the operational GFS. That said, it could be an outlier – the ensembles are far less optimistic about snowfall totals on Mt. Hood. While they’re giving an 80-100% chance of total snow at 12” or more on Mt. Adams by Monday morning, they’re only calling for 20% chance of the same on Mt. Hood. Let’s look at the operational GFS and stay skeptical about it.
The snow level starts around 4500′ Friday morning and falls to 2500′ midday and 3500′ in the afternoon and evening. We’ll have snow in the morning, sunshine in the afternoon and evening, and light snow overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for the daytime, for 2” new. Another 0.1” WE is forecast tonight after midnight for another inch. Wind: SW 20-35 in the morning, WSW 20-25 in the afternoon, SW 5-15 in the evening building to SW 20-40 overnight.
Heavier snowfall is forecast for Saturday, but as I said earlier, be skeptical. A clear morning gives way to snow around sunrise, sunshine in the afternoon, and snow overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 2500′ midday, and 1500-2000′ overnight. The operational GFS calls for 0.6” WE day time (6” new snow) and 0.5” WE (5-6” powder) overnight. That would be amazing, but again, be prepared for disappointment. Wind: SW 20-40 all day turning to WSW 20-25 overnight.
Sunday starts clear or partly cloudy and turns snowy around sunrise. Clear sky is the afternoon forecast, and snow returns overnight. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. The operational GFS predicts 0.8” WE during the day (overblown, probably) for 8-9” powder. Another 0.3” WE (3” fresh) is predicted overnight. Wind: WSW 20-25 early, SW 20-40 around sunrise, W 35-40 in the afternoon, and WSW 25-30 after midnight.
As you see, if that operational GFS comes through, we’ll have a couple feet of snow. The ensembles are highly tilted towards a less snowy outcome. Either way, the base elevations of Timberline and Meadows should pick up at least 10-12” new snow, and even Skibowl’s base will have a nice coating by the end of the weekend. If we look deeper into the future, we see warmer, wet weather on tap as models generally agree on warming. Enjoy this chilly, wet weekend. Think snow!
Gorge Wind Forecast
A series of low pressure systems moving along the coast combines with frontal systems moving inland for three more days of start-easterly-finish-westerly. Friday starts with easterlies at 10-15 in the usual spots. After 11am or so, the wind turns westerlies. You’ll find 7-10 in the west and 14-17 from Rowena eastward. The wind drops to 10-13 in the eastern Gorge mid-afternoon. Be quick if you’re going for it! River flow is 69,700cfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 54F.
Saturday starts with 15-20 in Cascade Locks, but that may be done by sunrise. After 10am or so, you’ll find gusty (with drizzle) 15-25 in the western Gorge with gusty 24-28 east of The Dalles. Be quick about it. After 2pm, the wind drops to 15-18 in the east and 7-10 in the west. High temp: 50F.
Sunday, once again, starts with easterlies at 10-15. After 1pm or so, the wind turns to W 5-10 in the western Gorge and 14-17 from Avery to Arlington. After that, uncertainty rises, so we’ll end it there. Move on to the snow forecast for some cheery news!
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
