Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s a brutally windy morning on Mt. Hood, as anticipated. High wind will likely affect lift ops and also scatter the falling snow unevenly across the slopes. After today’s snowstorm, the incoming weather switches directions and brings much colder air with a shot at a couple inches of easterly orographic snow on Saturday. Sunday looks sunny, very cold, and quite windy. Monday: sunny, warmer, and light wind. Lifts will likely be affected at meadows today (Friday) and at Timberline on Sunday unless the wind forecast for Sunday changes.
Let’s dive in to Friday. We have a weather system pushing in from the NW, which is the ideal direction for snow accumulation on Mt. Hood. There’s not all that much moisture around, but the orographics will do their best! The snow level starts at 3500′ and falls to 1500′ overnight. Up to 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for up to 6” new snow. Overnight: 0.1” WE at most, for up to an inch. Add in some tree litter! Wind will be NW 40-50 this morning, NW 30-40 this afternoon, NNW 20-30 this evening, and NW 15-20 overnight.
Saturday starts off with sunshine. By mid-morning, cold air drives in from the NNE and builds some orographic clouds along with light snowfall. Overnight, the sky clears. Models do not handle this well at all. Let’s go with this… the snow level will be 1500′ in the morning and will fall to 0′ in the afternoon or evening as 850mb temps (5000′) drop from -4C in the morning to -11C in the afternoon to -16C overnight. About 0.05” to 0.2” WE is forecast for a trace to a couple inches of fluffy new snow. Wind will be NW 15-20 early, E 10-15 through the afternoon, and ENE 35 overnight.
Sunday will be sunny, cold, windy, and super-dry. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ all day with 850mb temps (5000′) at -16C (single digits F) in the morning, -13C in the afternoon, and -7C overnight. No precip. Wind will be ENE 35 in the morning, ENE 25-30 int eh afternoon, and E 10 overnight. East wind really affects Timberline (not so much Meadows or Skibowl), so check the website before you go. Wind chill will be frigid, so make sure to cover up exposed skin.
Monday looks warmer as 850mb temps rise from -7C early to -1C int eh afternoon. Sunshine sticks around all day. Wind: E 10 int eh morning, W 10 int eh afternoon, and W 15 overnight. Tuesday also looks dry, as does the rest of the week. Temps warm each day and should be above freezing on the slopes by Wednesday. Have a great day today!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Yesterday was a wickedly windy day, at least for the middle of winter. Hopefully some of you got out. We’ll have another round of strong westerlies today as offshore high pressure holds. You may have to travel a bit to the east to get it. We start Friday with pressures of 30.31/30.18/30.08 (.13/.10) and westerlies in the 25-30 range from Rufus eastward. Morning wind holds at 25ish near Viento with gusty 5-15 between Swell and Doug’s. IN other words, it’s lighter where it’s cloudy and drizzly. As the clouds burn back, the wind settles at gusty 25-29 from Viento to Avery with 20-23 at Rufus and 17-20 at Arlington. Rufus may overperform. River flow reading this morning: 144kcfs (two sits inaccessible). River temp: 40F. High temp forecast : 46F.
Saturday starts with W 10-13 prior to dawn. Cold air surges in from the NNE and turns the wind easterly by mid-morning. We’ll see E 15-30 from Hood River eastward with 10-15 west of Hood River for the morning. Afternoon wind rises to E 20-30 all the way from Rooster to Arlington. High temp; 40F and falling in the afternoon. Sunday’s easterlies extend way up into the mountains thanks to a very deep cold pool. Rooster will be 30-50, Stevenson 25-40, Viento 20-25, and everywhere to the east 10-20. Afternoon wind settles at 30-40 at Rooster and 20-25 at Stevenson with continued 10-20 to the east. High temp: 29F.

Mostly cloudy sky with intermittent drizzle this morning turns partly cloudy this afternoon and clear overnight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s all day. Strong westerlies. 100% chance of rainbows. Saturday will be partly cloudy early and will likely add some light snow mid-morning. Temps start in the upper 30’s and fall during the day. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday will be sunny and cold. Temps start in the upper teens and rise to the upper 20’s. Moderate to strong easterlies. No rainbows.

There’s a giant, all-hands-on-deck HRATS Family Man cleanup happening on Saturday, 1/28 from 10am-3pm. Second chance: Feb 4th. Please bring wheelbarrows and snacks. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.
Cycling
Be thoughtful about your riding choices as we enter this dry period. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
