Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Looks like Timberline won’t be the only game in town this weekend: Meadows is going for a “limited opening”, details coming soon. That’ll be nice, because the mountain is going to get about 10” of snow over the weekend, and more lifts means less crowds!

For Friday, Mt. Hood will be clear for most of the day with high clouds in the evening. Watch for a pretty sunset. No precip today, but the free air freezing level will be 2000′ in the morning and 3500′ in the afternoon. Wind will be W 15 during the day and WSW 20 in the afternoon and overnight.

Saturday brings light to moderate snowfall all day. The snow level will be 3000′ to start the day and will slowly drop to 1500′ after midnight. The mountain will see about .3” water value (WV) between 4am and 4pm, for 3-4” of powder. Another .4-.5” WV falls overnight, for 5-7” of powder. Wind will be WSW 20 in the morning, SW 15 in the afternoon, and W 25 after midnight.

Sunday starts off with some orographic snowfall and turns clear in the afternoon. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning and 500′ after midnight. Approximately .3-.4” WV falls before the snow quits, for 3-5” of dry, fluffy powder. Wind will be W 25 in the morning and NW 20-25 in the afternoon, which could considerably up the snowfall totals due to orographic effects.

The extended forecast has clear weather for the mountain from Monday through at least the following Monday. Temps will start out sub-freezing, but by Thursday, temps on the mountain will near 50 degrees.

Random Morning Thoughts

I had a terrible dream last night. I dreamed that my throat was closing up and I was having trouble breathing. When I finally woke up, I realized that I was dreaming this because I was having trouble breathing – there was a soft, fluffy, adorable cat tucked under my chin compressing my windpipe!

Sometimes we get swept away by a situation. We end up frustrated or angry or afraid of the people involved. Our thinking becomes black-and-white. But often, if we can take a step back and look at the situation a little more objectively, we realize that we’re actually interacting with a loved one, or at least with someone who has qualities we can appreciate and feel warmth towards. That can help us be less reactive, and less reactivity means less suffering for us and the people around us.

Next time you feel like you can’t breathe, take a little pause and look around. Is the thing compressing your windpipe a monster, or is it a fluffy, adorable (and sometimes annoying) cat? Have an awesome day!

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Friday, expect light wind in the morning and west wind at 5mph in the afternoon. I believe that still qualifies as “light” wind. On Saturday, we’ll start with E 5, climb to E 10-15 near Rooster Rock and Stevenson for a few hours midday, and turn to W 5 in the afternoon. Sunday starts with W 7-10 through the entire Gorge. As high pressure builds off the coast, we’ll see afternoon westerlies at 18-22 between Stevenson and Mosier. River temp is 48 degrees.

Gorge Weather Forecast

There seems to be a Nothing cloud out there this morning. The low clouds should burn off this afternoon, giving us high clouds or sunshine, depending on the proximity of an incoming weather system. Temps will be near 40 early and in the upper 40’s this afternoon. Light wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks cloudy with rain. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. East wind in the morning. West wind in the afternoon. 84% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks drizzly early and dry in the afternoon with sunshine. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 88% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s still too muddy to ride anything but Syncline, and Syncline is pretty muddy too. Starting Monday, we’ll be heading into a freeze-thaw cycle, which will leave the trails sensitive to damage. Repeat this mantra: “If it was below freezing last night and it is near or above freezing now, I will not ride exposed trails.” Your best bet when temps go below freezing is to ride trails under the canopy or ride the roads. Save the date for December 14th, the HRATS annual fundraiser at Double Mountain.

Upcoming Events

Hood River’s annual tree lighting ceremony is Friday, and as an added bonus, Hood River will have a menorah lighting too! Hooray! MAZALTOV! Friday morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Looking long range, the Meadows Avalanche Dog Fundraiser is December 7th at Double Mountain, and the HRATS annual fundraiser is the 14th, also at Double Mountain.
