Gorge Wind Forecast

Offshore low pressure combines with even lower inland pressure on Friday for a day of strong and gusty westerlies. Easterlies return for much of Saturday followed by another round of westerlies on Sunday and Monday. After that, models disagree, so you’ll want to vote early and often for the GFS; it’s predicting at least three days in a row of 25-29 in the central Gorge. The Euro is having none of that, so no solid predictions are possible past Monday.

Back to today, Friday, we’re looking at a day of strong and gusty westerlies in the eastern Gorge. Clouds and sprinkles will limit the wind in the west; expect 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River today, all day. It’s likely the wind will be slightly stronger from Mosier to Doug’s. That stretch will likely remain cloudy, but may hold at gusty 18-22 today. Winning locations today will be east of The Dalles – Avery to Boardman will max out at gusty 27-31, fading after 5pm. In case you were wondering, day-starting gradients were .09 and .09, flow was 299kcfs (that’s swift for Rufus, but people have done it – definitely experts only), and river temp was 54 degrees.

On to Saturday: a giant area of low pressure sets up off the Oregon Coast. Surface wind turns easterly and upper flow turns southerly. The nature of this system will lead to widespread easterlies. Max wind will be 20-25 near Rooster and Stevenson. The rest of the Gorge, probably all the way east to Arlington, will see easterlies at 10-15 with higher gusts. A front moving in late afternoon will turn the wind around to westerly fast as whiplash, so be prepared for a switch to W 10-13 with rain.

We’ll be back to westerlies on Sunday as transitory high pressure appears offshore. The day starts with 5-10 and clouds int eh west wind 12-15 from The Dalles eastward. Midday wind looks like 16-19 everywhere, and peak wind will be Mosier to Rufus, 2pm to 5pm, at 22-25. If Monday’s GFS is correct, we’ll see 26-30. After that? No agreement between models. Vote early and often for the GFS.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Jones Friday: no. Saturday: no. sunday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Friday: no. Saturday: nope. Sunday: 8-11. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: S25-30/S25-30/S20-25, W swell 5′ at 9 seconds and SW swell 3′ at 15 seconds. Saturday: S5/S20/S25-30, W 7′ @ 13. Sunday: W5/W5/W5, W 7′ @ 12 and S 4′ @ 8.

Road and Mountain Biking

First, this week is National Bike to Work Week! Falls Creek is rideable, but there is some snow (unclear how much) if you ride from the pass. An out and back from the bottom is a better bet. Dog River is open. Other 44 Road trails are not. Nestor is open. With about 0.2” of rain in the last 24 hours, Post is likely to be a combination of slick, tacky, and dry spots. Remember that there is a race in Post on Saturday the 18th.
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. There is a parking area 0.5 miles farther down the road. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
