Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s cloudy with flurries on the mountain this morning, and I’m way late writing the forecast because I’m so distracted by the weather for the Hood River Valley next week. You can read more about that below. Anyway, Expect clouds and light flurries on the mountain during the daylight hours followed by snow-switching-to-rain tonight. The snow level will be 2000′ early, rising to 6500′ this evening and falling to 2500′ by Saturday morning. We’ll see maybe .1” water value (WV) during the day today, giving us 1” of new snow. We’ll see another .2-.3” WV tonight, but that will most likely fall as rain. Wind will be W 10-15 during the day, rising to W 30-35+ overnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Saturday starts out clear and turns snowy in the afternoon. Snow continues overnight. The snow level will fluctuate between 1500′ and 2500′. We’ll see a few flurries in the morning and steady snow overnight. Between 1pm Saturday and 4am Sunday, we’ll see .5-.6” WV, giving us 5-8” of new snow. Wind on Saturday will be W 40 for much of the day, fading to W 30 after sunset.

Sunday looks snowy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. The snow level will be 2500′ early, falling to the surface after midnight. We’ll see .5-.6” WV during the day, for 5-8” of new snow. Wind will be W 30 in the morning, turning to NW 30 in the afternoon and becoming SW 10 after midnight.

The long-range forecast currently shows us receiving 3-5” of dry powder on Monday, sunshine on Tuesday, and a messy system late Wednesday into Thursday. That messiness will include a mix of snow, freezing rain, and rain.

Random Morning Thoughts

Weather forecasting can be really exciting, especially when I look at the models and say, “Oh shit.” That’s what I did this morning, when the ice storm wish-cast from a few days ago looked even colder and wetter than when it first appeared in the model runs. Thank goodness for my couch-owning friends in Portland – there’s no way I can get home from school on Wednesday night!

Every time I crash at a friend’s house, I think about the website couchsurfing.com. Before we monetized our spare bedrooms, we offered them out to others for free. We gave strangers the gift of a place to crash. You can still do this on Couchsurfing or Warm Showers (the same thing for touring cyclists).

While Airbnb will earn you dollars, these other websites will earn you good karma and gratitude. You’ll have a chance to get to know other humans rather than simply having a financial transaction with them. If you’re doing airbnb, I’d encourage you to also host some couch surfers or warm shower folks. Just give it a shot. See how the experience differs from your airbnb experience. Call it learning. Learning is good. Generosity is good. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Light wind turns westerly after 5pm. 4% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks dry during the day and rainy in the evening and overnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. 18% chance of rainbows. In the extended forecast, we’re looking at light snowfall on Monday and a blizzard followed by ice storm on Wednesday night into Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking

It is, of course, still too wet to ride Post, Hospital or Whoopdee. Syncline is a maybe. We are probably going to lose all the high-elevation rides in the next set of storms, so get it while you can. In road biking news, tomorrow may be dry enough. Tuesday looks dry all day but icy and cold, so that might not work out so well! There is a work party in Post Canyon tomorrow morning at 9am. You should be there, especially if you’re one of those people who’s been riding in the mud and damaging the trails.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and that means we’ve all missed the Kickstand Coffee donut run, which is a bummer, because a donut sounds GREAT right now. The run is at 7am, and will earn you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Coming up Saturday, the HRATS have a work party in Post Canyon. Meet at 9am at Family Man. There’s also Spanish-language yoga at 7am at Flow, a trail run at 8am in Post, and the Cold Lap cross ride at Dirty Fingers at 3pm. I’ve just learned that White Salmon lights their holiday tree on Saturday. They will have open fires and … yes… s’mores!

Have an awesome day today!
