Friday: more of these sunny days…

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when the mountains and beaches are closed? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider subscribing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to subscribe? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $12.34 or more gets you a subscription. Click below to subscribe. Thank you!!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All the mountains are closed, the forest is closed, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available at this time. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Take a look at this sobering article about a recent BC rescue and consider carefully if you want to put others at risk. Remember, Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time. This is to comply with Kate Brown’s executive orders. It’s the law, folks. Obey it!

Mountain weather: continued sunshine… For Thursday, it’ll be clear and sunny in the hills. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 12,000′. Wind: NNE 10 early, NW 10-15 in the afternoon and overnight. Friday will be sunny, yet again. FAF: 11,000′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind: NW 15-20 early, NW 25-30 in the afternoon and overnight. Saturday starts with some high clouds. Mid-level clouds develop in the afternoon, and the sky clears overnight. FAF: 7000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, 3000′ overnight. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, NE 20-25 in the afternoon, and N 15 overnight. Dry weather continues for the long haul with a very slight chance of showers middle of next week.

Gorge Wind Forecast

First, a public service announcement. All Oregon (Viento, Rowena) and Washington (Doug’s, Hatchery) State Parks are closed at this time. All Port of Hood River waterfront access is closed at this time, although the walking path is open. The Army Corps has closed all parks (The Wall, Rufus, Roosevelt). They have also closed boat ramps. Swell City is closed. It’s best not to go – especially if you don’t live in the Gorge. Please follow legal guidance to stay home, save lives.. If you’re local and getting on the water somehow, follow Maui rules: rig quickly, get in the water, and leave as soon as you are done. No hanging out. Maintain at least six feet space on land and on the water. Do not place yourself directly upwind or downwind of anyone. Don’t go harder than 50%, and keep your focus at 100%. This is not the time to get injured.

Now, the wind forecast. For Friday, offshore high pressure combines with an approaching weak weather system in the afternoon for strong, gusty wind. Morning westerlies will be in the 15-20 range from Viento to The Dalles. By noon or so, we should be seeing 25-28 from Viento to The Dalles, assuming the approaching shortwave hasn’t started to impact the wind. If it does, expect the wind to turn gusty and unreliable. Late in the afternoon, areas Rowena eastward climb to gusty 26-30 with the assistance of this weather system while western Gorge locations drop to gusty 19-24. River flow is 127kcfs and temp is 48 degrees.

Saturday starts out with solid westerlies in the wake of a departing weather system. High pressure building inland in the afternoon knocks down the speeds. The wind starts with 23-27 from Viento to Maryhill. It slowly fades to light westerly east of The Dalles. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Doug’s, fades to 17-20. Sunday starts with E 20-25 near Rooster with E 10-15 near Stevenson. Afternoon wind picks up to E 7-10 from Swell eastward with 15-20 from Rooster to Viento. Monday currently looks light and variable, but that could change.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

What you see when you GOLU is basically what you get for the next week or so: mostly sunny, dry weather. For Friday, morning temps will be in the mid 50’s and afternoon temps will climb to the upper 60’s. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong westerlies fade in the afternoon. No rainbows. Sunday looks sunny all day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 60’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Cycling

ALL trails in the Gorge are closed. Hood River County (Post Canyon, Pinemont, HRC forest roads), SDS (Underwood, Whoopdee), and Kreps (Hospital Hill) lands are closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus by incoming hoards of visitors. DNR land (Nestor) is closed per the DNR website and a little tiny sign at the bottom of the Nestor trail. USFS (44 Road trails, Syncline) are closed. State Parks (Columbia Hills, Twin Tunnels) are closed. There were two considerations: protecting medical professionals, and keeping crowds away when the weather is nice. Google Sun Valley’s Covid-19 rate if your are curious what crowds of recreation visitors can do to spread coronavirus.
