Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
While there’s definitely some rain in the forecast for the slopes on Saturday, the forecast from Saturday evening on through the start of next week more than makes up for that if the best scenarios come out on top. The GFS is a lot more aggressive with the precip than is the ECMWF, so cross your fingers for the former. Generally speaking, the models give us a range of 2.0” to 3.5” total precip by Monday night. Most of that will fall as snow! Looking long range, we see nice cold weather around for the extended forecast.
Friday starts out clear and cold. Wax for it. Clouds may pop up intermittently/ models suggest they will deepen this afternoon. Snow starts up overnight and switches to a snow/rain mix after midnight. Just a trace is forecast. The snow level will be 1000′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Wind: SW 5-10 during the day building to SW 15-35 overnight.
Mixed precip or drizzle is forecast during the day Saturday followed by heavy snow overnight. The snow level will be about 6000′ during the day, 4500′ in the evening, and down to 3500′ (or less, given the isothermal environment) overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent will fall during the day. Another 1.2” WE is forecast overnight (models have a wide range, though). Perhaps 0.2 to 0.4” will fall as rain followed by 6-8” dense, heavy snow. Wind: SW 15-35 in the morning, WSW 30-45 for a few hours in the afternoon, and SW 20-45 overnight.
Heavy snow is forecast all day Sunday. Again, models do not agree on total precip amounts, so let’s generalize. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 2500′ (or less) in the afternoon and overnight. Somewhere between a foot and 2.5 feet of snow are forecast for the 24 hour period. Hopefully we’ll have a better idea tomorrow. Wind fore the period will be SW 20-35 in the morning and SW 10-20 for the rest of the day. That snow is going to lay down nicely! Another round of heavy snow is forecast during the day Monday before we enter a short dry period Monday night. After that: cooler weather with lack of agreement on just how much snow will fall. Sounds good to me. Enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
