Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood picked up about a foot of snow over the last 24 hours, and that’s pretty much it for big storms this year, more than likely. We’ll see clouds today and Saturday followed by very light drizzle Saturday night and Sunday. A little snow on Monday gives way to a warm, dry, sunny stretch for the extended forecast.

Friday kicks off windy, partly cloudy, and wintry. This is the forecast today followed by increasing clouds overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning, 3500′ this afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. We probably won’t see any precip, but we also can’t rule out a little very light mixed precip or mist or fog or drizzle after midnight. Good part: it should stay at least partly cloudy, enough for the snowpack to hold up for a few hours of turns. Wind: W 40 early drops to W 25 mid-morning and turns to NW 20-30 in the afternoon. Overnight, the wind drops just a bit to NW 15-25.

Saturday will be cloudy all day. We can’t rule out a little fog or mist as clouds and moisture stick around. We also can’t rule them in, at least until the evening, when a trace of rain is likely. The snow level will be 5500′ in the morning and 6500′ from mid-afternoon on. Wind: NW 15-25 in the morning turns to SW 5-15 in the afternoon and overnight.

Sunday will likely have just a bit of drizzle. Depending on the cloud depth, we could see upper-mountain sunshine in the afternoon. The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning. Temps rise to 0C at 8000′ in the afternoon. The snow level falls to 2500′ overnight. UP to 1” of new snow is possible. Wind: SW 10-15 in the morning, SW 20-30 in the afternoon, and W 20 after midnight. A little bit of snow or freezing mist is forecast Monday before the sky turns clear late afternoon. After that: a sharp warming trend with 10,000’+ freezing level by Tuesday afternoon. The dry, warm weather holds through at least next Saturday, when we’ll say goodbye to Meadows for the season and also probably say goodbye to the daily snow forecast for the season.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Generally speaking, west wind is in the forecast until the early-middle part of next week. We’ll see high pressure settle over the Northwest. The exact location of that high will determine which direction, if any, wind we’ll see. For Friday, we’re in post-frontal weather with westerlies generally in the 7-10 range. The exception, as always in this setup, is Viento, where the wind was in the 20’s early. We’ll see the wind pick up to 16-19 east of The Dalles for a few hours today before retreating to areas west of The Dalles at 16-19 this afternoon. It’ll be gusty. River flow readings are 119-147kcfs, river temp is 48F, and high temp forecast is 52F. Saturday will be calm all day. High temp: 62F. Sunday starts calm or very light westerly. The wind slowly builds as a cold front nears. The first indication will be gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles, then gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus. In the afternoon/evening, the wind is likely to shift east of The Dalles and make it into the mid-20’s. That said, we don’t have a ton of model agreement on these stronger wind speeds, and it may make sense to bank on 19-23 instead. High temp: 60F. While the deterministic model suggests Monday will have lighter wind than Sunday, the ensembles take the opposite stance. Keep an eye on Monday for the possibility of stronger westerlies. Enjoy!

Cycling

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. My understanding is that Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of Borderline. IT’s been raining on and off. If it rained more than 0.1”, it’s likely to be slick and muddy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. With rain often stopping on the west side of Hood River, you may have better luck at Whoopdee or Syncline or Hospital Hill (which is full of ticks and poison oak). Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
